Jonny Drama On Hold 11:11 AM - John "JCal" Callaham - Consoles: Microsoft X-Box

Sierra Studios sent over a brief note stating that their upcoming Xbox action game Jonny Drama was, in essence, being put on hold. The cartoon-themed game was one of two Xbox titles that Sierra showed at E3 and the only one that was shown on the expo floor. The game was originally supposed to ship early in 2002. Here is their note:

After the overwhelming positive response Jonny Drama received at E3, Sierra realized the game's potential to be great. The development team has created innovative characters, great artwork and an appeal to a broad audience. The success of this game will also rely on the gameplay. So, we've decided to take a step back, take a closer look at the concept and redirect the game so its potential for success is unlimited. As this new direction is defined, we will let you know about our plans to move forward.
That sounds too familiar...

I saw that earlier today...sheesh...they never learn...

And by doing a quick find-and-replace, we arrive at something that sounds scarily familiar:

Rick, are you asking me, or Sanfam? I'm not sure.

The designer on the game is a guy I hired some years back. He's REALLY talented. I hope he doesn't get the same flack I did.

I remember on my last day, barking at him -WATCH YOUR BACK, IT MIGHT BE YOU NEXT TIME!

Hope I wasn't being prophetic. Used to be that if your game got cancelled, you got to keep your job. These days it seems that Sierra jettisons teams along with the project.

I am really thinking that the motives behind the cancelations is that Sierra realise that people might actually go 'Hey.. this game, good, other games, eg Pro Bull Rider, crap'

So there would be a couple of quality games the market would buy a lot of, and play for a long time, and not buy many small, stupid games, such as PBR

If you really want an example, there is Quake, A LOT of people still play quake, despite that it's err, how many years old now?

I believe this forum is not on the server that is going to be down.

As for the game, sierra is truly idiotic. Yeesh.

  • So how long until the fire the devs who are making the game?

give 'em a few...days. I hope they don't let them go, though.
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
So basically, they realised what an incredible success this game will be and thought, "How can we possibly have such a successful game? This doesn't fit with our image! Cancel it!"
Or maybe they're taking the Middle Earth route: "Woah, man! This game is incredible and tens of thousands of people are so deeply interested in the world this game is based in that we will get in lots of shit if we try to change it. And the team we have working on it are doing an incredible job and making sure that they are true to Tolkien's works. We had better fire them, dump what they have done and 'start again'!"

    B5:ITF wasn't the only casualty.

  • I spoke with Vassily today, and he survived the "hold". I think that he is the only one left of the ItF crew of developers still at Sierra NorthWest.

He remarks were most entertaining, but I am afraid not repeatable. (Vassily was working on Johnny Drama, now he is on something else.) I hope that they aren't wasting his 'l33t 6r@p|-|ix w1z@rdry'.

Yeah it seems the only way they get products these days is from make-in-a-week games like Pro-Bullrider 59 and from 3rd party games.

They probably sit back, point and laugh, then sell their games to someone else.
