Harlan Ellison

I was just watching "The Terminator" on DVD (It's very good I might add, and you should all buy it), and the first thing is says after the film has ended, but just before the credits start to roll is
Dedicated to the works of Harlan Ellison
...or something like that.
So does anyone know what Ellison's works are, and if they are any good.

Oh and for those of you who don't know, Harlan Ellison was one of the Executive Producers for B5, and he also came up for the idea of what the Shadow Planet-Killers would be like.

So if anyone has any info it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

Cherio.

  • What would you like to know about Harlan Ellison's work? Short stories, essays, screenplays, radio dramas, novels. His works span something like 50+ years. He's also a pretty good friend of JMS and Walter Koenig (Bester). He's also listen in Who's Who of American Writers.

The reason that the Terminator says that is that the original idea, "Soldier" was a work of HE's fiction. He got into a big copyright infringement case over it (they settled out of court). His fights with studio heads are the stuff of legend. He was once hired and fired from Disney Studios on the same day for making some pornographic remarks about Micky and Minnie Mouse where Walt Disney could hear him. His words of wisdom are, "Don't **** with the mouse."

He's written the ST:TOS episode "City on the Edge of Forever." He's been awarded every major award that a fiction writer can get, and has more awards than any other living fantasist. You can't not read HE and not be heavuly influenced by it.

He's also pretty damn funny in person. Two of my favorite quotes are from him:

"Next to hydrogen, stupidity is the most common element in the universe."

"It's easy to become a writer, the trick is staying a writer."

Sounds like just the sort of person to have onboard with B5 then!

You should also go and get a copy of I have no mouth and i must scream from somewhere. It's a great game. It's from a novel written by Harlan Ellison. and he does some voice work in it too. If you like good adventure games, i suggest it.

"Are you a god fearing man, senator? It's such an strange phrase. I've always though of god as a teacher... as a bringer of light, wisdom and understanding. You see, i think what you really are afraid of is me. Me and my kind, the Brotherhood of Mutants. Oh, it's not so suprising really, mankind has always feared what it doesnt understand. Well, dont fear god senator, and certainly dont fear me... not anymore."

Ah, Einstine was the first person to say that. This, of course, reminds me of the definition conversational humor.

Harlan didn't actually write the version of City on the edge of forever that was made... his version had all kinds of things such as the crewmembers dealing drugs back and forth etc... the script was basically very out of character with the show... Gene rewrote the basic story idea to fit the universe, and that's what we've all seen on screen... funny thing is, harlan won a Hugo for the script he wrote.. go figure

  • Both of the versions of COTEOF were nominated for awards. HE chose the original version. The whole sordid story is detailed in the TPB version of COTEOF.

Actually, HE wrote about 7 drafts. DC Fontana wrote the version that appears on screen.

I would commend any of his works to your attenetion.

I think I remember him (or some other director) being bitter over that fact: that the story displayed was so different from that written by himself.
