This is the ISA..... (John J Sheridan)

We are pleased to announce that the Victory Class Destroyer's big brother, the ISAS John Sheridan class Battlecruiser is now completed. Of the two prototypes one is on field tests. She has yet to be names (I need Ideas on names!) and the second, the ISAS John J Sheridan, named after the first president of the ISA is here with us today.

Ladies and Gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to present the ISAS John J Sheridan.

I know, I know it is a lousy piccy, but I am working on textures and renders! Anybody wanna help with the textures?

And now class names, please feel free to give suggestions. I was thinking of naming the class along the lines of people who had knowingly given the ultimate sacrafice.

The third principle of assencant life - Drall from a voice in the winderness thingy?

So lemme see we have:

John Sheridan (Z'Ha'Dum)
Drall (Voice in the Wilderness)
Marcus Cole (Whatever ep that was)
Jeffery Sinclair (War without end)

etc etc etc. Ideas on either the ship names or class naming ideas (Remember the first HAS to be John Sheridan so think along those lines!)

That's nice. Very nice. My recommendation is to pump out a few pics with just plane gray (or red, or blue, or pink with yellow polka-dots) textures so we can get a bit of a feel for it.

Also, I think that the John J. should be the class ship. My vote for the second prototype goes to the Marcus Cole. Sure, he's not technicaly dead, but he's a lot closer to being dead then any of the other people on your list!

Also, my recomendation would be either to texture it with Excalibur style hexagon armor, or White Star wavey armor. I'd create the White Star armor in the same way that's discribed in the Betterspace White Star tutorial in the texturing section.

I'm expecting some major free time to arrive in about a month, so if you need anybody, I'd love to help with a White Star style texture.

Also, all the great prefixs in history have been three letters. If I'm not mistaken, the ISA boils it's down just like Starfleet does. Ergo:
United Federation of Planets StarShip = U.S.S.

InterSteller Alliance of Worlds Ship = I.A.S.

The point? It would flow better as I.A.S. John J. Sheridan, same as U.S.S. Enterprise is better than U.F.P.S.S. Enterprise.
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Incorrect. I'm positive there are name prefixes with either more or less than three characters. It's just that United States Ship, Her Magesty's Ship, Royal Mail Ship (I believe. Hamblin, correct me.), and others all can be shortened to three. Technically, trek should have the ships as SS for Starfleet Ship, or UFPS for United Federation of Planets Ship. Babylon 5 has EAS, short for Earth Alliance Ship, and I forget what S:AAB had, but that was four characters.

Well I'm going to throw some VCD hexagadional textures on her this afternoon and post the piccys tonight. I was also thinking Vorlon organic David of Mac - but again it needs to be made (Scurries off to check out tutorial!) I have got her loaded into blender (- DAM is she BIG!!!) and most of her sorted into approprate colours and names. So she should be easy to do when I start her at around 13:30 hours today.

I think the Hel'Zha has to be next. She heeds a heavy fighter compliment after all to make up for the lack of the VCD main gun!

    BTW is B5mg still offline?

Later! I got to go to the library to return oferdue library books! (Shows how much time has been spent on her!)

    URGENT!
And the URL for the Whitestar organic armour tutorial is located at.....

  • Looks pretty good, but I think the wing angles are wrong. The sketch of the ship by the designer looks to me like the should be at 60 degree angles all round.... as you have them looks very odd.

    Cheers

  • Yes, the wings need some changing
  • EternityEternity Elite Ranger
I know. I tried em at 60 degrees as was proper, but I had a small problem. It went along the lines of there was a BIG hole between the wings and hull. I settled at 45 degrees, but as I see more and more errors in the mesh to correct I may rebuild the wingbases.

And during WW2 Germany was KV (Kegsvermarine Vessel) ?SP?
  • Kriegsmarine, if I'm not mistaken. Basically, my point is, prefixes can be whatever you want them to be. Although the Dutch technically use the prefix "HMS", the rest of the world call 'em "HNLMS", in order that we don't have yet ANOTHER "HMS" in the world, I'd imagine.

They can be as long or as short as you want them to be. You can have a prefix longer than the ship's name if you wish, though depending on how long it is, it'd be an ass to remember. ISAS sounded good.

Also, it's good to have a certain naming scheme, then stick to that, though that's not necessarily something you have to 100% stick to. The US Navy sometimes deviate from their naming schemes. The Ticonderoga class Cruisers are all named for battles, except one - USS Thomas S. Gates. The Los Angeles class Submarines are all named after cities, except one - USS Hyman G. Rickover, named for the father of US Nuclear powered submarines. Though, she's been decommissioned now, along with many of the Flight I Los Angeleses.

The Royal Navy, again, deviate from their own naming scheme sometimes. The Broadsword class Frigates were meant to all be given "B" names. But when HMS Bloodhound was being constructed, the City of London persuaded the Royal Navy to rename her HMS London. The previous HMS London had just recently decommissioned, and the City wished for the Royal Navy to continue having a ship named after the City, in order to honour their great maritime links, or something like that.

After that, the next ship was named HMS Sheffield, to honour the previous ship to bear the name that was lost during the Falklands War, and the same goes for the one after that, HMS Coventry. After that, I think the Royal Navy took their chance, and instead of going back to the Bs, they went on with C names, with the next four Broadsword class Frigates being commissioned Cornwall, Campbeltown, Cumberland and Chatham.

One more example (just to bore you even further). The Invincible class Aircraft Carriers - the first two were Invincible and Illustrious. The third? Ark Royal, for two reasons. Firstly, the third HMS Ark Royal (this one being the fifth) was a heroic World War II Aircraft Carrier, probably Britain's equivalent to the USS Enterprise. Except that ours got torpedoed by a U-Boat in the Mediterranean, in 1941. So, it was honouring that name.

Secondly, the fourth HMS Ark Royal had, at that time, just been the latest casualty in a rapidly declining Defence budget, and an atmosphere of thrift was abound in Whitehall. In order to smooth over public opinion, the latest Invincible class Aircraft Carrier was named Ark Royal. So, in a similar way to how there is feeling that there should always be a USS Enterprise in the US Navy, here in Britain, there's a feeling (by those who care, anyway) that there should always be an HMS Ark Royal.

So, while naming schemes are nice, they don't have to be adhered to completely.

Lastly, if you're naming a ship after a person, they usually do this after they've died, and they're always sponsored by a woman who's somehow associated with either the ship or the ship's namesake. However, there is one exception that I can think of. USS Ronald Reagan, due to commission sometime in 2003. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's not dead yet, right?
