HELP, I BEG OF YOU A2597!

I am about two minutes from ripping my hair out of my skull and starting a forest fire with it. For some reason I cannot for the life of me figure out how to texture my models in Blender. I can get them black and white, but I can't add color or any of the textures I downloaded. I'm sure I'm missing something extremely obvious, but please help. Also, how do I create my own textures?

    anyhoo, Have you read my tutorial on texturing at [url="http://www.b5blender.com"]www.b5blender.com[/url] ? and have you looked at any tutorial at [url="http://www.blendermania.com"]www.blendermania.com[/url] ?

    they have some really good ones.
    As to making your own textures...what kind? metallic, fur, etc...

    A2597, I went to your tutorials and they put me on the right track. However, I still have a problem. I was doing this tutorial , and when I separate the roof from the house I can only texture the base of the house, and not the roof for some reason. Can you help me out?
