Digital Domain closes new Florida studio, I experience deja vu

When I first saw that Digital Domain's new Florida studio was closing down, I wasn't too surprised. They'd been having problems for a while, and were trying some pretty sketchy things like opening a for-profit school and giving students "assignments" that were production work on real projects.
However, given the talk by their recruiter when she visited my (accredited, public) university class, and the unpaid student labor thing, I was under the impression that their plan was to exploit the local talent pool. So I was surprised when I read that they'd moved a bunch of people across the country only to fire them when their grand gamble didn't pay off, which immediately brought to mind what happened with Sierra way back when.

You know that Woody (over at F3D) just moved down there a few weeks ago to work there.
Sucks big time...
So it's like spec work, except you have to pay to do it? That's pretty dodgy. They can't have been in very good shape if they had to do that.

That's terrible. I actually hadn't even realized it had opened yet.

Who keeps on hiring at a company you know is about to collapse?
