So yea, 3G option is always a plus.

It seems fairly good imho, and costs only 199 euros atm. I would be mainly using it as ebook reader, reading some comics and such on the road. The memory size isnt all that great, but still decent. I've got a 16 gb microsd card ready for it anyway.

But I know some of you here will know of some better options and even more fancy tablets for sure. :)

I would prefer staying in the 7" range, cuz I kind of prefer something small sized for what i would be using it for. It isnt to replace my netbook or pc thats for sure. :)

I love my Xoom, and android 3.x, Have you looked into getting a Nook, rooting it and putting Androidn on it?

I'm interested to see what amazon are announcing on the 28th. Rumour is a tablet to challenge the iPad

Nooks actually comes with android. All you have to do is make it so that the Nook app doesn't auto-launch at boot. Basically, the Nook is android + a custom app that runs on top of android and blocks you from getting back to Android. Silly, yeah :D

As for what is out there, frankly 90% of the stuff is sucky hardware. The Motorola Xoom and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 are really the only good quality hardware items in existence beyond the iPad. I've never used the Galaxy Tab, but the Xoom has a clunky feel to the interface relative to the iPad, probably because the Android tablet interface is still beta more than anything else, but does work fairly well.

Interesting hardware info: the HP TouchPad software was ported to run on the iPad...and ran a lot faster. That is, the TouchPad was under speced in terms of hardware in order to compete, part of why it failed. Oops. But you can pick it up for $99 and I believe someone has already ported Android to it.

One thing you really want to consider for an E-Reader is battery life, and right now nothing even comes close to the iPad battery life.

One of the big issues with tablets right now is most of the competitors with the iPad have either canceled their lineup before it ever hit market or only had it available for a very short time due to poor sales. Even the Xoom is somewhat limited in availability due to poor sales. The Dell Streak has vanished entirely. The HP TouchPad is on the way out as fast as they can sell off their inventory. It's really hard to find a decent quality competing product when every product line out there keeps failing to sell well enough to stay on the market.

True, but with amazon's cloud service and online store it's far better placed to challenge Apple in terms of content than any of the others. Whether the hardware is up to it is another matter

I guess we'll find out soon.

The Eee Pad Transformer is also supposed to be a good Android tablet but it's a bit bigger than what you're looking for, Refa.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Truth be told, I've started thinking about selling my netbooks and moving on to a tablet on the go.

The Transformer is one I've thought about, and there's also the Slider, which has the built in slider keyboard.. and then there's that one ASUS pad that is kind of neat idea. It's a 10 inch tab that has a 3 inch or so screen mobile with it. You basically plug in the mobile into the back of the tablet when you need larger screen.

I like my Galaxy Tab 10.1 a lot. I don't find the interface clunky at all, and it's just as responsive as Apple's (i.e. smooth except when the garbage collector is running). Feature-wise, I find the interface much more suited to the large screen than iOS, which is better on a smaller screen for me.

My Galaxy Tab does.

The Eee Pad Transformer supposedly has a 16 hour battery life. But only when you have the keyboard connected, otherwise it's half.

I tried the Toshiba Thrive for about 12 days, and didn't care for it, so I traded it in for the Asus transformer. Mostly the same hardware, and the same software and yet the experience on the transformer was better than that of Thrive.

I admit part of that is because netflix didn't work on the thrive, and that was one of the reasons I bought it, but I like the transformer. Its not too expensive, and it does everything I ask it to do. So far, so good.
• I'm really wanting the EEE transformer, from playing with it and everything I'm reading, it's the best 10" android tablet out there.
(Better than the Xoom)

For 7in, go with the Nook. decent little android tablet, and the root process is easy as can be. I owned one for about 6 months, sold it to my parents as I found the screen too small for my uses.

now torn between replacing it with a Transformer, or a Mac Book Air.
• I vote to wait for Ice Cream Sandwich to come out. You'll see many many more apps than you see on the current segregated versions of android
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
How's the screen and build quality on Xoom? I've seen it on sale for not that much more than the 7 inch one I showed, and yea.. I could get rid of one of my netbooks in exchange for that.

The 3G version seems most interesting even if about 60-70% of the usage would be at home with wi-fi.

What I worry about is the battery power, as well the screen quality. Good to read when outside? Do you need to worry about scratching it a lot? I know the new asus ones have the gorilla glass, which they use in my motorola defy, and dont need to worry about scratching the screen at all, I can tell you that..

But what the asus ones dont have is 3G. Atleast for now.

Oh yea, is it possible to watch HD movies on the Xoom properly? So that it wont be lagging, like what they promise..
• Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
I guess one question is what are you planning to use it for? Surfing the web? Documents / reference? Graphics?

I ask because the Xoom I have used had a very poorly color calibrated screen, way off in accurate color, very washed out. If color isn't an issue for you, then no real reason not to seriously consider the Xoom.

As for movies, no idea.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Mostly planning on using it for surfing the web, reading comics, watching tv shows and movies on the go, playing some games.. Reading ebooks.. Basically everything I've used my current mobile phone for.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Well, after reading some reviews, the Xoom might not work exactly for me.

Need to put those Asus ones into consideration, or wait what type of other ones are released or confirmed in the next month or two.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Turns out there is or will be a 3G version of the transformer.

The Amazon tablet has been revealed.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Yea... But its not exactly open android from the box, and none of the stuff it offers is actually even available in Finland.. :P

Otherwise it seems kind of.. i dunno.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I never said it was what you were looking for :P
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
What is it that you need it to do that you think the Xoom won't? I'm with Biggles, I love the Xoom's (Honeycomb's) interface, works just as well as iOS, I wouldnt use it for reading E-Books in the sun, too glossy. As for battery life. I generally get a full day out of a charge, even with heavy web surfing and watching a full baseball game on it.

The Thrive is crap compared to the Galaxy and Xoom, my wife LOVES toshiba products, so when the thrive came out, she gave it a try, it feels like a toy compared to the Xoom, very flimsy feeling. She's going to either get an Amazon tab, or a galaxy 8.9 or 7
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Toshiba has realised their error with the Thrive. They're planning a new tablet that's similar to the Galaxy 10.1. I have no idea when it will be released, though.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I'll have to check it out, But if the Xoom isn't going to do what he needs, then i'm thinking a tablet may not be the right choice. Since they are all pretty much the same bones with slightly different port configurations.
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
Xoom does everything I need, and was planning on one, but then I was told in here that the screen quality isnt that great. That its quite dime.

Also it doesnt have the gorilla glass on the screen.. so I would be worrying quite a lot about scratching it. Never scratched any other electronics of mine but still..

So the Asus Transformer seems to have best of both worlds (minus 3g)
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I have no problems with the screen quality, And the Xoom does have Gorilla Glass. (source https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/337441)
• Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
For some reason, Xoom is now almost 200 euros more expensive than Transformer.. all this for 3G? Will be looking for more.. but yea, right now Xoom is pretty much on the lead in interest. That gorilla glass thing was what worried me most. Have to go to a store to check it up in hand too next week, to weight on that. I wouldnt be needing it until next month or so.

edit: Well, speak of the devil.. I did find one that claims to be 3G, and only for 499, when its generally around 599-699 euros in here. Sent in email to double check before I order tho..

The media edition seems interesting.

Glad I saved my money instead of purchasing a tablet just yet..

Only thing I am terrified is the possible price. That has to be atleast 500 gbp or more..
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Yeah the Media Edition does seem nice, Not sure about the cut off corners on the thing though, I'm not sure a Caprican tablet is what i'm looking for, Might be hard to get support since the planet was nuked.
