Do you see loops of rubber? If so, those are retreads that have come off. I've seen a few of those in NZ, but none here. Retreads that are too old or not applied properly can come off pretty easily. Fortunately, they're not very heavy, but I still wouldn't want to hit one at speed.
So my wife's cousin went to see her Dr today, they took her in for a CT, turns out she has a concussion from hitting her head on something in the back seat. or maybe the window.
but the rest of us are still fine, other than a slight case of crazy. but our Dr thinks we had that before the accident.

I've seen a tire explosion as well two years ago, it was a truck on the opposing lane in the highway, about 500m ahead of me.
I heard a big boom, and then pieces of the tire went flying.. I was continuously calculating where one of the big pieces would land, as they really flew sky high..
*Does not hit - Does not hit - Does not hit*
And eventually it didn't. The big piece landed in the middle "safety" area, and I didn't even lower my speed much.. That was due the red crappy old car which was hanging on my rear for some reason, if I would have used brake I'd gotten into accident due this idiot. Calmness was the key here, luckily I had enough time to calculate the risks and estimated landing vectors, kinda makes you respect the subconscious mind.
I suppose it was pretty much doing the same thing what they do at NASA when calculating asteroid impacts...
So I finally heard from the insurance adjuster yesterday, There was some disagreement between him and the shop about the amount of damage, so the shop had him come back out and look again, In adidion to the tire/wheel, the firewall behind the tire is cracked, there was some damage under the dashboard and ot the heater assembly, The preliminary estimate is $6629, but the guy said he expects to find more damage. and they have not priced parts yet.
Unfortunately for me, $6629 is not enough for them to total the vehicle, and unless they find at LEAST another $4,000-$5,000 in damage, i'm going to have to accept a repaired vehicle, which i'm not totally comfortable with. When I talk to the guy again today, i'm going to try and get them to use Genuine Subaru parts, however they are under no obligation to do so, I can insist, but then i am required to pay the difference between the Aftermarket parts and the Genuine parts.
Yes, it has to do with the impact point, had the car continued to roll over they would have deployed. but because i was able to keep control there was not enough impact at any of the sensors to trip the bags.
And as was pointed out to me, had the front airbags deployed, i'd never have been able to keep my hands on the wheel to maintain control and we'd have prolly flipped.
And I just got off the phone with the insurance adjuster... They noticed some bowing in the roof of the car, so they started taking measurements, and aparently the frame is bent, Totaled... Time to start searching for a new car...
I wasn't comfortable with the repairs, and it looks like I was right... But now i've got to hope they give me enough to pay off the car and make a decent downpayment.
So we did some test driving today, checked out the 2011 Forester 2.5x Premium (basically the same car I had) and the 2.5x Limited, The limited is sweet, but i need to decide if i want to spend the extra $2500 on it.

If you don't want to spend it on the car, feel free to spend it on me! :p
Lol, it all depends on what the insurance company gives me for the car. that will determine how much i have left over for a down payment once i pay off the old car's loan. I'm hopeful as the dealership i was at yesterday crunched some numbers for me, and told me that the insurance company SHOULD be paying around $21,500 for totaling the old car, and if they offer less than that to fight them on it.
i LOVE it!!! The built in backup camera is kind of silly, but the leather interior and the bluetooth entertainment kit is awesome! i love being able to stream music right from my iPhone to the stereo via Bluetooth!
Mostly good, I got a sweet car (in a color i like better than my last), Paid almost $600 less for this one than i paid for my last one, My monthly payments are now $50/month less than before, and my interest rate on my loan dropped from 7.25% to 2.9%.
The only bad news, I had to spend about $4k out of pocket between the extra down payment, taxes and Registration, which means no new laptops or motorcycle this year.

We just bought this. Sanfam's going to hate me. I do have an awesome sunshade, though.
Entil'Zha: Things like the reversing camera and the awesome AV system are pretty much standard equipment on cars here, now. The reversing camera is actually pretty useful on narrow Japanese streets and in tiny Japanese car parks. Even my car, second hand from a few years ago, has all that stuff except for the bluetooth connection (we got the low-end navi with an iPod cable instead). It's quite a change from what I'm used to. I'm particularly fond of the F1-style gear shifts.

Also seen one fly off a truck before, flew like, 30 feet in the air before coming down. (Guess that's the retread you were mentioning?)
