As you may have noticed, access to the B5MG has been a little iffy recently. This is due to a worldwide mid-life-crisis that the global DNS (domain name system) seems to be having.

The problem is that your browsers are having a hard time finding a server that can tell them that the URL 'http://www.b5mg.com' should look at the webserver with IP address 204.97.242.72...

So, you can take matters into your own hands and manually create a file which will tell your browser where to look without having to ask a DNS server. This file is called a hosts file, and lives in your Windows folder.

To create it, simply create a new text file called 'hosts.txt' in your Windows folder, and put the following text into it:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
204.97.242.72 www.b5mg.com
Then rename the file to hosts (lose the .txt part), reboot your machine and away you go. You may actually find that you already have a hosts file somewhere in your windows folder - if you do a search and find it then use that one rather than a new one. For example, my one lives in C:\WINNT\System32\Drivers\Etc\ for some reason

Anyway, if you create this file, or at least put the www.b5mg.com IP address in there, your access problems should all disappear.

How do the same thing for Mac users (am I the only Mac user here? Seems unlikely, but after the trouble I went through to figure out how to do this, I'll take the chance):

1. Open SimpleText. Type the following, with tabs in between each item
www.b5mg.com A 204.97.242.72

Save it, and call it "Host File" or something to that effect.
2. Open the "TCP/IP" Control Panel. Click the button on the left that says "Chose Host File..." In the resulting dialog box, find the file you just made and open it. Then close the control panel and save when it prompts you to. If your ever board one day, find the DNSs for all your favriot sites and put them in your host file using the same format. Depending on your connection and your DNS server, this may provide a good sized proformance boost.
Well, Jack, this has been going on for the past 4 months I think but right now it's pretty bad. I sincerely hope Avatar will look into since it isn't the server that's causing the problem.

Do what DoM said, should resolve it.

FYI:

For Windows 98 users the file name is "hosts.sam".

You may also want to add an entry for this to the "lmhosts.sam" file as well...

Thanks guys for the IP address...

I received a message from Scott a week ago about him having to renew his Domain names that he owned.

In regards to B5MG.com I did a whois lookup at Network Solutions and it appears he has it still until next year...

So, I don't know what the problem is...

Jack: the hosts.sam file is merely a SAMPLE file. The actual fine Windows uses is called "hosts". It doesn't have a file extention.

note: Win2k users can find their hosts file in "WinNT/System32/Drivers/etc"

One more thing: You DO NOT have to reboot! The change takes place instantly. (one of the few things in Windows that does that)

Right. Because the file is parsed on every single lookup; so you want to limit how much you put in it .

Down again. How do I get the hosts file to work with Win NT4 - SP6? It works great at home with Win 98, but I can't get it working here.

Ex:

This time the server was down as well so not even the IP address could help...

Yeah I know, But when the IP address isn't working, I'd like to get my hosts file working on this computer.

Ex--

I saw your Starfleet ship posted over there in the LW forums-- I tried to post, but I've forgotten my password in the shuffle...here's my reaction...

"Looks good, but you may want to consider adding sources for the spotlights that highlight the Ship Registration (top of saucer) and the starfleet logo (on the upper pylon). Don't feel bad about missing it, I've seen several other ST models that do the same... "

Thanks much for the comments Rick. The spotlights are already on my list of things to fix.

Nice! A destroyer! I have been looking around for one of these!

My notes: Impulse drive...sucks
Warp nacelles near perfect, although the nacelles should be identical. The thing about those old nacelles is that they had two mount points. Top and bottom. Thus, it should have a slight ridge on the already heightened section. I'll try and get some source photos.
THe bridge, while nice, is just a bit too tall and has no real depth.
Lastly, the saucer, while looking in proportion, is knocked off scale by the rim lights. Those little lights make it look so small. They must be scaled up!

Otherwise, excelent I love it!
