Netbooks!

Lord RefaLord Refa Creepy, but in a good way
How many of you use these?

I purchased one from my trip to Taiwan few weeks ago, Asus eee pc 1015PD. Cost about 190 euros, and definitely worth every penny. Just installed windows 7 ultimate, and added up to 2 gb ram. Pretty nice for well, most of the stuff i have been using pc lately. Still got my fujitsu for the heavy stuff, but hell.. Might start using this thing a bit more anyway.

Battery lasts about 7 hours when browsing the web, reading comics and watching some tv series. It lasted about 8 hours, or a bit more, with the original oem stuff, but meh. I can live without one hour extra battery life. I could never just sit around for 7 hours either.

But knowing you guys, I guess you already had these and have moved on to tablets and whatnot.. :P

My netbook is kinda crappy, i shoul dhave added more memory when i got it, I didn't pay attention to the fact that the memory is soldered onto the MB and youcan't add more...

I'd like a smaller laptop, so maybe netbook or tablet, but I still need my laptop with active digitizer on the screen. My sister got one and I've played around with it a bit, would be nice to have something so light to carry around.

As was said in another topic, I'm looking for a tablet, But I may get one of the new dell convertables, I need something that i can do excel/word, internet stuff, and if i could run quickbooks on it that would be great, it's going to be used mostly as my work computer. (tax deduction!)

I have an Eee 901, one of the early models of netbook.

It's served me extremely well, especially when travelling. Sadly it's been showing signs of coming to the end of it's life but when the time comes, I'll definitely get another.

    Worf

Netbooks don't have the power for compiling, so they don't work for me. I use a computer that's about the same weight, slightly bigger size, and has a more powerful processor (despite which I still get 5 hours out of it).
  • I have an EEE 900a running XP. I use it for songwriting and screenwriting since it's so portable.

I got it pretty cheap from woot but it has one of the older integrated Flash drive that has some R/W speed issues. I would like to get a newer one at some point, perhaps a 10" (mine is 7")

I have an eee 701 with Gentoo on it. It's a great little device.

I have an Eee 1001 which I've been really happy with, but since I got my iPad I've not used it very much so I've let my folks have it for now. If money were no issue I'd probably get another as well

What are you using for antivirus, firewall btw? on netbooks..

    Windows programs preferrably.

Btw, my windows 7 starter netbook is using 30% of 2 gb RAM even in idle.. is that normal? I mean, i dont see any choppiness or anything on normal usage, and the idle cpu usage is 0-2%.

Funny thing is, my main laptop, a fujitsu sa3650, has 4 gb of ram and windows 7 ultimate 64 bit, and its using 30% of ram as well in idle. Same cpu usage. Tho, it is running torrents at the same time.

I'm guessing it's superfetch. If I recall correctly, it keeps application files in memory so in theory they load faster, but it only uses that memory until another process needs it, so it shouldn't be a performance concern.
  • I use AVG free for A/V on my netbook.

That and my brain. I practice smart browsing, save the porn for my work computer, etc...(j/k on the last)
