Harlan Ellison says he's dying

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
from SciFi Wire (Blastr)

"The truth of what's going on here is that I'm dying," Ellison told The Daily Page. "I began to sense it back in January. By that time, I had agreed to do the convention. And I said, I can make it. I can make it.'"

"This is gonna be the biggest f--king science-fiction convention ever," Ellison said, "because no con has ever had a guest of honor drop dead while performing for the g-ddamn audience. The only comparison is the death of Patrick Troughton, at a Doctor Who convention. And I don't think he was even onstage."

I wonder what illness he has, or if he just feels old :(

I knwo he's been in poor health for a bit now, just not sure with what. At least he's got a good sense of humor about it.
  • Man, this sucks. I mean, I know he's old (I believe 76 or so) and I've been expecting it, but it's going to suck not having him around any more. At least I got to see him a few years ago in person. And I even had him yell at me!

What did you do to earn that privilege? :D

I had the pleasure of seeing/stalking the man for nearly six hours some two/three years ago. He just plain oozed some odd mixture of cool and psychotic. It's a shame he won't be making any more mass appearances, but he is somewhat up there in the years and hasn't exactly been careful with his lifestyle or habits :P
  • Oh, I was just sitting in the front row, and sometimes I bounce my leg a bunch when I'm excited or nervous, and Harlan saw that and said it was distracting and then asked everyone in the audience if they also found it annoying when they saw people doing that in theaters out of the corner of thier eyes and such. I stopped for a while, but then started doing it again, and he looked at me and said "You're doing it again..." It wasn't done in any mean spirited way though. I know that he wasn't insulting me or anything, just pointing out something that annoyed him.

That's a good memory to have of meeting him.
  • Well it's not like that was the only time I saw him. I also had him tell me the story of how the first edition of The Glass Teat was pulled for some reason, so it's really rare. He told me this (well, everyone in the area during the signing) because I had a first edition The Glass Teat that I brought to have signed, but I had no idea it was first edition or of course the story behind it. And now it's signed!
And there were the other times at the convention I saw him telling all his stories.

Recorded with an older digital camera. Small file segments mean gaps exist, and most of my attention being placed there means I often neglected to follow the duo as they moved. Peter David and Harlan Ellison telling stories for an hour...I would never want to be on the wrong side of a fight with either of them.
