I've got a few dozen other sites, but I think the above cover most of what you might find useful.
Sanfam: better than his usual crap tho! :p
(hint: Watch Burn Notice. She likes to make big booms more than Jamie Hyneman of Mythbusters!)
Earl is creeping up the South Shore of Nova Scotia now and knocking power out as it travels, so I expect to lose power at some point but we're prepared. It was downgraded to a tropical storm, however Canadian weather service (Environment Canada) has said that because it is travelling over warmer than expected waters, the eye is regenerating and will hit us as a Category 1 hurricane.
We had a really bad hurricane in 2003, Hurricane Juan, which did a lot of damage and since then we've had lots of Hurricane plans in place which were implemented over the last week.
We have a 24' sail boat which we secured 2 days ago which is on the mooring field (the best place for it).
So all in all we're not worried, see you on the other side!
Short answer: yes.
In some areas, they're above ground to the street, and underground from your house to the street.
We made it with only an air conditioner destroyed. We lost power for several hours before bed and Mom tried to move the AC unit out of the window herself, needless to say the next morning, we found a damaged unit on our deck below. Not too bad considering it was our spare that she had given to us in the first place.
Highly ironic that we lost power pretty much after the wind died down. It passed through Halifax as a Category 1 hurricane and our boat was fine.
