August 14, 2010, 12:00 pm ‘Star Wars’ Films Coming to Blu-ray Next Year
By DAVE ITZKOFF

Though nearly 35 years of “Star Wars” fandom have yielded all kinds of memorabilia inspired by George Lucas’s outer-space epic, including light saber lookalikes and wearable replicas of Princess Leia’s slave costume, one holy grail has lately eluded fans: a video version of the “Star Wars” films that takes the fullest advantage of their top-of-the-line home theater systems.

Now if only LOTR Extended Edition came out on Blu Ray, i'd be happy.

• [sarcasm]It will be so much better than the previous releases. [/sarcasm]

Babylon 5 on Blu-Ray on the other hand...

I hope these are the classic versions...

My first thought on reading that was "which version?" followed by "how much will this privilege cost?".

Another opportunity for Lucas to fiddle with it and gouge us at the same time probably

It's coming out late next year, so I wouldn't get too excited yet :(

There will be a LOTR extended DVD. They've already said it will happen closer to when The Hobbit is released.

Oh, so you mean, NEVER>....

Pretty much...

If you don't feel like waiting a year to see the deleted scene they're talking about in the articles, it's been posted here.

Worf
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Good, if somewhat short. I wonder if they'll include all the deleted scenes from the other movies, with the option to include them in playback. I hate it when they include the deleted scenes, but on another disk or with no option to watch them during the movie. I dont see the point in including them if you cant watch them in the film...
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
You could probably make another movie or two with all the bits that ended up not getting used. :D
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Honestly, i don't care about extras, I care about picture and sound.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I care about the version...

Likewise, but it just really bugs me when they put these things in and you cant watch them as part of the movie. I mean, they usually only cut the scenes because they don't fit in the theatrical version, so it should be up to the viewer if they want to watch them as part of the movie

The directors cut of DUNE was so fubared that I just try and forget it exists.

Directors cut of BladeRunner on the other hand... :)

Don't count on the original release edition to ever be re-released again. I expect a cut where everyone but Han shoots first. :P
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Apparently Lucas has said it's "too much work" to make the original versions suitable for blu-ray.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
He said the same thing when the DVDs were first announced.

The master reels that had the original films were altered to make the special editions. When they did eventually put the originals on DVD, they used laserdiscs for the source.

I'm still not sure why he's dragging his feet to make more out of the franchise. It's almost like he doesn't care.
• SpiritOneSpiritOne Magneto ABQ NM
He doesnt. He knows Star Wars is a joke now, and he doesn't want to be remembered as "that Star Wars Guy".

Yeah, he turned it into a joke after episode one. I bet he's still kicking himself for introducing Jar Jar, the only character he's created more hated than Howard The Duck. :P

I'm sorry, George who? George the Star Wars guy Lucas? Like he hasn't done anything worthwhile since, that George Lucas?! :D

I don't know who you are talking about!
• I hope that Star Wars guy wont start thinking about continuing the saga with episodes 7,8 and 9... Or 0,-1,-2.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Episode 7-9 should only exist if they are adaptions of the Thrawn trilogy and directed by me :)

As shocking and painful as it is, I must agree with you. At least you couldn't frak it up any more than Lucas has :p

With the script written by Timothy Zahn himself!

Abso-frakking-lutely dammit!
• sadly, we'll never see the Admiral Thrawn trilogy, but it was excellent.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
I have thought about making it as a fanfilm trilogy but I kinda wanted to do original stuff instead.
• I don't know....

Honestly, I think I'm done with Star Wars. The news of a Blu-Ray release elicits no feelings in me other than, "Here we go again."
• I'm actually with Akrovah on this one. The new ones killed what the originals had.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I'm with Patton Oswalt on this one... if only I had a time machine. :D
