nvidia graphics card owners: don't install driver version 196.75

Apparently, a problem with the fan control in that version is causing cards to overheat and die:

    I wonder who is affected by this problem?

    I am forced to use OEM driver updates and hardly ever get to actually install plain nVidia drivers.

    Is that for all those blokes who still buy their GPUs separately at retail stores?

    fun times, luckily enough I've always thought the fan on my graphicscard runs too slow, so I have it set at 85% every time a game starts.

    Fortunately, laziness means I'm always way behind on applying nvidia driver updates, so no worries for me! :p

    Oddly enough, i think thats the version I installed on my wife's laptop, and it solved her overheating problem, go figure....

    They've had a series of issues lately with drivers killing cards. the .64's for a while caused overvoltage issues on several G92's.

    nVidia has been getting pretty lax these past few years. On the upside, AMD/ATI is about to steamroll the nVidia offerings and seems to have improved its drivers substantially over the past few releases.

    What a PR disaster for Nvidia. I became heavily anti Nivida after the Ageia card borking. I hate even having a Nvidia chip set on my mobo, but I don't feel like upgrading my whole PC.
