• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Howabout funding a shuttle replacement instead?
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Or a free bar and snacks for our meetup?
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
In theory, this isn't ruining our plans. It just makes them repeatable :p

And that's always a good thing.
• What plan?

Is this some frakking toaster forum?

Oh noes! Someone has found out about our plans to destroy humanity. Quick! Our disguise as space shuttles has been foiled!
• Yeah, we used Saturn V's for, what, not even 10 years? The Space Shuttles are going on 30 years of operation here. They really need the funding to be replaced.
• I agree with Croxis. It's time for the new era. We're still launching into space with tech/designs from the 70s. Russia is still using Soyuz, from the 60s...sure there have been upgrades, but come on! If we don't innovate, we'll never hit Warp 1 in my lifetime, or discover our first jumpgate:(

I was thinking about that the other day. People have taken inspiration from Star Trek gadgets and created real world versions. Communicators, Padd's...my phone can even act as a very basic tricorder.

That's all well and good. But where are the STARSHIPS?

• Worf, we haven't even reached Seaquest status, we're a ways away.

Oh noes! We're still using cars from the 60s!

Just like a car, the basic mechanics of the Soyuz design are well proven and still mostly in use, while the guts are very new and modern. The same goes for the Space Shuttle. Both Russia and the US have time and again proposed completely new designs to replace their existing ships. What is needed is the money to both develop a new ship while still flying the old. Unfortunately, that's unlikely to appear unless it's for the military.
