Gathering of FirstOnes 2010, US-Region.

SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Recently, a few among us started talking about some interesting ideas for what would make a good trip. At some point the discussion turned toward the impending retirement of the Space Shuttle, and how much we'd love to see it. Then it hit me. Why couldn't we organize a trip to go watch the final launch in person? We've had a few small gatherings in the past, but this seems like a perfect opportunity to take a little time and do something fun with it.

Dates: September 15 - 19.
Where: Roughly in and around the Cape Canaveral region of Florida.
Who: Us!

I'd like to see if we can get enough of us together to make a really good time of it. I'm going to be heading down with near certainty, and I know there are others here who have done said trip before. Several of us are even in the region already. Trips to the region are cheap, and a major airport (Orlando) isn't particularly far from the area so cheap airfare could be had via JetBlue, Southwest, or AirTran.

Discuss.

If I can, I'll be there.

Make sure to think about alternative things to do there, as delayed or scrubbed launches are not unheard of... and by alternative things, I don't mean feeding the alligators. :D

Well hopefully I'll be graduated by then and in a proper job, so chances are good I'd be able to make it :)

The location is perfect for me as my folks live 100 miles from Kennedy (where i'm actually typing from at the moment, in fact, i'll be at KSC later in the week) however the time is as un perfect for me as possible :( We just bought the cafe, and september is midseason and there is no way in hell we can get away. Also, with Obama's cancelation of the Aries/Constellation project, i expect the shuttle's demise to be delayed.

Thats ok Entil'Zha, if that happens we'll just come and camp out in your cafe! :p
  • Damn, we're looking at going to Orlando in May...and catching that launch.

    It's a great idea!

Hey, if you guys ever want to have a gather on an island off the coast of maine, y'all are welcome to stop by the cafe. Has to be in the summer though, town's a bit dead in the winter, and by dead i mean DEAD. 90% of our population goes away.

I'm down in Florida for the next 3 weeks, and there isn't a shuttle launch in sight! dammit!
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
    Whose fault is that? :p

Anyway, if you *can* come, that would be fantastic. Making a quick trip down to meet what is likely the site's administrative body and a couple of other minions wouldn't be a bad opportunity to relax! You know those Maine hotties will wait for your return :p Anyway, I'm suspecting the shuttle won't be extended any further. The budget wasn't expanded to include such a goal, so it's doubtful.

And with luck, the launch won't be scrubbed for our stay :P
  • I'll do my darndest to finally make it to one of these. The Cape works well for me. :)

IF there is any way to make it i will, September is such a tough time for us as its the heart of Cruise Ship season, AND when the college kids who work for us have gone back to school.

As for the shuttle, I know there was no money in the budget for it to be extended, but the money that was earmarked for Aries is supposed to go back into nasa's budget for other things (From what i've read) and without the shuttle or aries, what does NASA have to get things to the ISS.

Regardless of extension, I think we can do this! :p

Entil'Zha, convince the wife to watch over the cafe! ;)
  • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Entil'Zha, you have a daughter. It's time to put her to work!
  • Random ChaosRandom Chaos Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
I doubt I'll be able to get away for anything this fall due to using up my vacation time late spring/summer this year.
  • Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Biggles, she already does work! lol, unlike the older daughter , this one has a good work ethic, when she wants something, instead of asking for cash, she asks what she can do to earn money. She earned all the money last summer to buy herself a new Nintendo DSi.

RC, just take the train down! :P You love trains! And space stuff! DOOO EEET! Make this a gathering of epic proportions!

And if you've never been to a shuttle launch, it is one of life's greatest enjoyments. As incredible as watching a launch on TV may be, being there and watching it go up, it's amazing!

I've seen two launches and a landing, and they were both amazing, especially the launch

Fantastic. I'll be getting back to this thread soon with more specifics, but I think if we've got enough of us interested, this could be a blast!

    Is this the where-in-the-world-is-Sanfam thread?

Something fishy is going on, he can't be that busy. The underground cellar to keep his victims must be finished by now.
