The Wicker Man

... is the title of a 1973 movie [URL="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070917/"](with Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee)[/URL] and its "remake" released in 2006 [URL="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0450345/"](with Nicholas Cage)[/URL]. The original was labeled to be [I]Britain's best horror movie[/I]. Not sure if this holds true to this day.

    Ok, so I saw the original Wicker Man. I was truly shocked, not by the movie but by Lord Summersilse himself. I've never seen Christopher Lee with so much hair on his head before. :D Edward Woodward looked like his usual self, well dressed and well groomed.

    I believe there is a slight misconception as to what constitutes a true [I]horror[/I] movie. If this were a horror movie, every Greek tragedy would be considered a horror movie. Every pagan community would be considered a horrific abomination. The Wicker Man is a drama, no doubt, but it's only a borderline [I]horror[/I] movie.

    As it stands, I see no reason not to watch the remake. :D

    Ok, it's too late now. I've watched the remake. :D

    One thing's for sure, Cage was a lousy cop. You never neglect your sidearm or get caught with an unloaded gun. It just doesn't happen to a policeman worth his salt.

    I don't think the remake was that bad. Sure it's not as wacky as the original and its US setting wasn't exactly an improvement. You don't get the feeling of being stuck on an island in this one. Sure the cell phone coverage sucked but the lack of scenes by the sea/lake was quite striking.

    Indeed, the bees. I'm not exactly sure why they added those as they don't add anything tangible to the plot.

    Overall, the Wicker Men movies are only average dramas with some horror elements peppered into them. The remake could have kicked it up a few notches, but decided to go a different way. As could be expected in this US release, I didn't detect the presence of a single, offensive, mind-warping, naked nipple in the entire movie. :D

    It begs though the question as to why go through the hassle of remaking the film if you are not going to improve on the existing material?

    The Wicker Man is awesome. I'm taking of course about the 1973 version, since I have no interest in seeing the remake.

    The funny thing is, I find a movie like [URL="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091605/"]The Name of The Rose[/URL] a lot closer to the horror genre and yet it's not even classified as such on IMDb.

    What's so horrific about The Wicker Man? Ok, you have an entire community conspiring against one man. You have the pagan rituals. In the remake you've got the matriarchal structure and the bees. :D

    I must be missing something.
