The baking of video cards... now I've heard it all. Despite it sounds interesting and further reinforces my belief that computer equipment are only made to last a year, I'd never suggest it to anyone.
The only components I've ever really had problems with are optical drives. Mine fail about once a year. I've started using no cd hacks for all my games, so this drive has been going for about a year and a half now.

It all depends on how you use your laptop. If it's a desktop replacement, it will last quite a bit longer. If you carry it along with you every day, that's quite a different story. I've seen laptops that looked like they spent weeks in a war zone. :D Some people also don't care enough to take care of their gear.

So that's major thing affecting to durability. (literally)
Desktop replacement use again can only refer to laptop not being transferred constantly around. Performance wise with common lack of available highest performanc in the first place and still worser lack of update options they just can't keep up performance wise.
Id rather buy a new video card now, than buy a new video card and a new motherboard next month. You can get a good video card for less than $100.
Ain't that simple with laptops...
And those almost systematically failing laptop graphics cards were fuck up of Nvidia.

I think I'll be next year now, but I'm still running a pair of 7900GTX's. They're pretty decent, but it'll soon be upgrade time again regardless
