Well, two of the best sequels Ive ever seen were Aliens and Terminator 2, and who made them?
I've talked with some classmates who saw it. They thought it was visually amazing but the story was terrible. I must have low standards!
There's nothing wrong with that. The story sure wasn't the best one around, but I found it highly entertaining, and that's what matters.
I realised the story sucked when a 10 year old girl started crying behind me when Spoiler: the horse with three axels was on fire... And I just concentrated how beautiful it looked.
Actually the story is deeper than one might think. I think we spent an hour arguing if this was a "racist" movie because of the white messiah saving the native people, or if it was the natives who really saved him.
The depth doesn't come from the so-called racist bits, so I don't know what you are talking about. :D
The entire cast is multicultural and the character who saves the day was paralyzed from the waist down. Ok, so there were no dwarves in the movie. Cameron can't have it all even with his billions.

Talking about me behind my back? :p
Anyway, yeah. Sounds like a good argument. I would definitely be on the white man being saved by the natives in that argument. I think he was more native than white when he finally saved them..
But I think all the Avatar critics are missing the point. There is more to a successful movie than its story. The food packaging industry certainly has this down to perfection. Saying that Avatar's story sucks is like saying that the crocodile that's about to eat you is a little cross-eyed (Jeremy Clarkson).
It is obvious that blind or deaf viewers will get a lot less out of the experience. No argument there.
I think a number of people are upset with the rehashings that Hollywood has done recently, constantly churning out re-imagining of old stories. Terminator 4, Spiderman, Hulk, etc etc.
The difference here is, there is no direct line to connect this to, it's a re-imagining of a concept, rather than a story. At this point, there will be people who hate on it simply to be different, and there will be others who simply didn't like it. But most of us liked it, as evident from the films international gross.
Yeah, the story was pretty much Dances With Wolves in space, but I still enjoyed it. I'm not one of those people who thinks that it's one of the best movies ever made, but it was enjoyable. I actually saw it twice with two different groups. The first viewing was in 3D, but that means nothing to me since I can't see 3D, and I saw it 2D the second time. Of course, I prefer 2D because then I don't have to concentrate on viewing through one eye and turning my head a bit.
RubberEagleWhat's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
Regarding the "unoriginal Story":
i think the Movie wouldn't have been the success it is with a more Complex Story. I think the normal moviegoing audience wouldn't have embraced the New Technologie and visuals. I'm pretty sure the unoriginal Story is Part of the Concept of the Movie.
So i FINALLY got around to seeing Avatar, I really enjoyed it, even if it was mind numbingly predictable. I was quite entertained, almost went right back in to see it again after (but we went and saw Percy Jackson instead)
I watched district 9 the other day and was underwhelmed after all the positive critique its been getting as opposed to Avatar, from film critics.
The things that separate these two movies from one another (apart from the budget) is that the story of Avatar is stripped down to the bare essentials (to a purity of style) in order to convey the aesthetics of Pandora, and it works. You also have characters (although not deeply explored) that you care about.
In district 9, the story is told well, but you dont really care about anybody, with the exception of the alien Christopher. More or less the same story is told (perhaps less in your face according to reviews), but there is a white man who has to help the oppressed in both. The difference is that you never get to identify with Wikus, he is more or less a two-dimensional character, though seemingly more complex perhaps than the characters of Avatar, it seems his only motivation in the film is egotism. The only part of the film that gripped me emotionally was where "alien" Wikus was making a flower.
So, Avatar vs. District 9? Avatar wins every time. While District 9 is a well told story with fantastic effects, the story does not speak to me, and neither do the characters.

One day I would like to see District 9... perhaps one day Cyberlink will fix their software so that it actually plays the blu-ray disc I bought months ago.
I only have one BR player in my laptop and I have yet to make the jump to the new format. I made the mistake of buying DVD's, I'm tired of playing the format game.
The only BD that i OWN, is the one that came with my PS3, but now that prices are coming down i may buy some, I watch them all the time (thanks Netflix) i wish RedBox would hurry up and add bluray everywhere!
So I bought a Samsung Blueray player for christmas along with the new tv, and I have a blueray drive in my desktop. Seems to play everyone that I have gotten so far.
I only own about 8 bluerays so far, but with Netflix we have rented a whole lot. They all worked.

Good I say, Id rather that history finished good than destroyed by a sequel..
I mean, I expected this movie to be TERRIBLE, and well. Obviously I was wrong. LOL

The story rocks... it's not deep, it's just right. If you want a story, go read a book or something. :D
Why did he paint the Navi blue? Certainly not because it makes for a great story.

Best movie critic of all times, and not only because he is funny.. But because he speaks truth from which most people close their ears.

Agreed, its not like you go to the opera expecting to be surprised, or watch a romantic comedy wondering if theyll end up together..

BTW, some people will indeed get big headaches from watching Avatar in 3D. I know two who have, both were women, not sure why.
I'm starting to see a pattern here... then you'll tell us you had carrot cake... and then I'll ask you if you liked the cake...
This is not a Twitter page!! :D
the book, i have not finished yet. but i am liking it so far, this is one of the few times that i'jm glad i saw the movie before i read the book.
It's not the greatest movie in the world, but it was fun, and I didn't feel i'd wasted my $9.50/ticket.

Have I mentioned recently how much I hate DRM?
