Animal 57 will soon be born!

Every six months or so I like to search for any websites that talk about that wonderful urban legend, Animal 57, which if you've never heard of it, says that Pespi Co. and more specifically, KFC uses genetically engineered beasts called Animal 57 for its meat products. The story is that Kentucky Fried Chicken changed its name to KFC because the government wouldn't allow them to keep calling their food "chicken" since it was now so far removed from the animal chicken, and for some reason, people call it Animal 57.
So there are two versions of this story, one is that it's just a block of meat floating in a vat of water with tubes of nutrients fed into it so it can recieve nutrients, and then they just have these things floating in the back of KFC and Taco Bell, and when they need meat, they just cut the pieces off that they need and cook them up. The other version is that it's a chicken with no feathers, no head, and four or six wings and legs. Here's a bit more about the block of meat version: http://www.kibo.com/exegesis/animal_57.shtml
So anyway, I was searching for any more websites making fun of this whole thing, and I found this: http://www.belligerati.net/archives/2008/02/animal_57_start.html
Now they just need to figure out how to breed these things without the head and feet!

Of course we all know KFC changed their name because of the negative connotations of fried food, and of course Kentucky :D
Edit: Actually, Snopes does: http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/kfc.asp It's just that they don't refer to it as Animal 57, that's what I was thinking of, though I know that the name isn't as well known as the rumor itself.
There's this ongoing discussion about analogue cheese, something that has the molecular properties and taste of cheese but was never made of milk coming from a cow. There are quite a few ingredients like that on store shelves already that have made it onto our dinner plates for years/decades and it doesn't look like things are going to get better as time goes on.
All those soy products look very suspicious to me. I've tried them all and I haven't tried them since. It's not that these things are bad, I mean people shove hotdogs down their throats and don't want to know what's in them.
I'm not surprised at all that large chains are looking for more efficient ways to make their products. It's clear that raising and processing animals for food production is a very time and money consuming endeavor. The alternative looks a lot more appealing to them, if not to us, the consumer. I'm always appalled at the thought that many baked and dairy products do not contain any or little chocolate or fruit, but only artificial flavoring. And still, many people don't care, not that there is much they/we can do about it, other than not buying those imitations. Or perhaps we can put our money where the real stuff is and support those who are still believing in the real thing.
I understand that we are heading towards a bottleneck trying to feed a growing world population and that we have to either find a way to feed more people or reduce our numbers as resources are limited. Right now you can still get the genuine article, you just need to pluck the money down.
As it is now, the future looks quite artificial to me.
