Underworld: Rise of the Lycans
Stingray
Elite Ranger
in Zocalo v2.0
Being a fan of the first two movies Underworld and Underworld: Evolution, I was eager to see this one. While I would have preferred to see Kate Beckinsale reprise her role as Selene, Rhona Mitra did not disappoint at all in her role as Sonja.
The visuals are just as dark and effective at bringing those mythical creatures to life as in the previous films. As this is supposed to be a prequel, it explains in no uncertain terms why most Lycans and Vampires don't like each other. The movie gets the job done, but before the last chapter comes along it commits the fatal (albeit necessary, I guess) act of dropping one of the main characters. The final part serves to tie up the loose ends, but at that point no one really cares any more. At least I didn't.
As others have pointed out elsewhere, the vampires (the way they were portrayed in the previous films) don't really get a lot of screen time. In fact the way they are portrayed you'll soon start to wonder how they got to be in the dominant position in the first place. It almost seems like the director forgot along the way that this was a movie with vampires in it. If it weren't for Bill Nighy (Viktor) wearing bright contact lenses you'd even forget that you were watching a bunch of bloodsuckers move about the set.
Too bad. Well, at least you won't mistake the Lycans for Mogs. :D 7.5/10.
