Calisthenics and bodyweight exercises. Nothing you couldn't do on your own. If you were serious about getting in shape though, I'd go to a gym or or go running or swimming etc. This is more for the kind of people who are locked in an apartment 24/7 and have nothing else.
• I really need to get back to doing my daily push-ups.... At least I can still do 25-30 on my knuckles on a hard surface in a single sitting, and I haven't been able to go to my Taekwon Do lessons for months. I really should work at it so I can eventually get to at least 35 I suppose. I'm actually pretty surprised with how well I've stayed in shape since not being able to make it to the classes.

My wife uses her's almost daily. Its not real strenous work, but it far more engaging that exercise tapes and such.

It's a good tool for my wife, who stays at home with a 3 yr old and a 9 month old and would not have chance to get out.

IIRC the gadget show did a comparison with an expensive exercise machine and came to the conclusion that it was very nearly as effective at improving tone and it cost a tiny fraction of the price.

I have it and used it for a while, I am not happy with the way is classifies you "normal, over weight, obese" it's a bit bad on your self esteem that way.

I do like the exercises, they are great if you just want a quick work out. I wish they had like little timed programs you could set up instead of having to stop and pick your next game.

Balance board is really sensitive and innovative, it'll be interesting to see what other games come out for that.

It uses BMI which does have some faults. It is only meant for adults, does not take into account some body types, nor those with high muscles (at times Brad Pitt could have been considered overweight using BMI only). However it is better than using weight alone as it does try to normalize your weight to your height. The labeling isn't unique to wii fit either, any BMI scale will have the same labeling.

The best assessment would be body fat percent, but there is no good way for wiifit to measure that. There are some scales which attempt to using electrical current, but it only measures the content of the legs and is very susceptible to how full your bladder is.

To be honest I'm exercising more with my wii fit than anything else. Gyms bore me terribly. Although it is easyer to lose weight by not consuming those calories than by trying to burn it (takes something like 10 minutes of running to burn off 4 cookies).

I took the basic ideas of the Hacker's Diet and counted my calories and weighted myself every morning. I then did a 4 day weighted moving average of my weight (day to day variations can be up to 4 lbs). I crunched the numbers and found the calories needed to maintain my weight (2000 ish) and what I need to do from there.

link to Hacker's Diet? Sounds intriguing!

I guess over all message is yes, it's fun but no you can't use it alone if you want definite results.

• Yeah, the BMI on it is jacked...like it was calibrated for Japanese body types or something.

I haven't been on mine in a while, but I used it 30/45 minutes daily for about 2 months and lost 12-15 pounds. It's not worthless, but I would agree it's not the *best* method for obtaining fitness. It is more fun than working out, at times.

Here is the standard bmi formula: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Body_mass_index
• I remember hearing that according to the BMI, Michael Jordan is obese. So I don't have much faith in that.
