What can I use?

To power a 500 watt portable light, portably?

Car is out of the question.

A small gas-powered generator is about your only choice if you want:

    A) The light to be available in any weather
    B) The light to be available at night

Solar and wind generators could definitely be found to supply 500 watts, but they will be far more expensive than an generator and less reliable.

BTW, 500 watt light is a large light, why do you need anything that big? If you just need that much light, look into LEDs to significantly cut down on the wattage needed. If you also need heat, you could then supliment the LED lights with other forms of heat
