Heh yeah saw that earlier. Stupid M$ :D

Yep.

And who counts the date by day of year, and why should any code completely fail if a year has an extra day?

Stupid M$ :)
• Good thing I don't even know what the hell a Zune is.

Its their "answer" to the ipod. Its more a statement of crappiness apparently :p

Thats almost as stupid as the group of F-22's that shut down completely except for basic flight controls after crossing the IDL on their way to Japan. They had to make their way by visually following their tanker. :D

While I'm sure that would have been a scary experience for the pilots, it sure is amusing :D

And no different to how it was done in the old days. Good old seat of the pants navigation!
• Vorlons in my HeadVorlons in my Head The Vorlons told me to.
Well seing as how they were right over the pacific I think navigation would have been tough without even a basic compass from a bluscreened glass cockpit. So much for high tech in a 350 million dollar fighter rendered almost useless by the equivalent of a y2k glitch. :P
• How about basic compass...surely they still had a normal compass with them?
(Sun / Stars not withstanding)

Why would you carry a basic compass when you're sitting in one of the most advanced, and therefore clearly the most reliable, pieces of equipment on Earth?

Redundancy... even in a "glass cockpit" you'll find a magnetic compass (even if it's only in the breast pocket of the captain, but you should see one mounted inside or in front of the middle windshield column underneath the ceiling mounted dashboard inherited from the previous generation of airliners.). :D

Check out this cool inside 360° view of an Airbus A380 cockpit! (I'm not 100% positive if that thing with a red ring is a compass though...)

I guess, it's almost all digital now. Better not leave that GPS cell phone at home. :D

I don't know, everything seems to point that there wasn't even the most basic form of navigation. Memo to all F-22 pilots. Carry pocket compass in case of emergency.
• Now this is both sad and hilarious! :D

Isn't a pocket compass part of a survival kit? If the movies taught us anything... :D
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
I would have thought so. The glass cockpit is certainly not going to do you any good in pieces spread over the terrain after you get shot down.
When the group of Raptors crossed over the IDL, multiple computer systems crashed on the planes. Everything from fuel subsystems, to navigation and partial communications were completely taken offline. Numerous attempts were made to "reboot" the systems to no avail.
Ok, now I can believe a story. AFAIK F-22 belongs to these new type of "unstable" fighters, meaning that if ALL computers crash, you cannot control it by stick anymore.

What I mean, is that the old-school fighters were like a ball inside a bowl - if you let go of the ball, it returns to the bottom --> control restored. Computer controlled fighters: Consider the bowl upside down and place the ball on the top, with your computers keeping it from falling. Computers fail --> ball drops.

The plane wasn't made by the "Round-Up" people by any change?

FYI, the Airbus A380, is one hell of an aircraft, i think i want one...

It's not so much that you can't control it manually. Rather that it's really fucking hard, and you have to be a hell of a pilot to pull it off, and even then you'll be investing all your concentration in keeping it level, so you can forget about any complex manoeuvres. Fighters have been getting increasingly inherently unstable for decades, because an unstable aircraft can manoeuvre much, much faster than a stable one.

I'm sure they have one in a survival kit. But I'm sure the survival kit is probably not accessible until after ejection. :P

Well, they used to wear their tape players on their laps to listen to their favorite tunes while breaking the sound barrier (or so we were let to believe), and now they'll just slide their midnight black iPods into their pockets and use the saved space to carry a compass as well. :D

Hm, not sure if they can access their pick-nick baskets during flight or if they have to crash first. They do have a lot of pockets in their jump suits though.
