And who counts the date by day of year, and why should any code completely fail if a year has an extra day?
Stupid M$ :)
And no different to how it was done in the old days. Good old seat of the pants navigation!
(Sun / Stars not withstanding)
Check out this cool inside 360° view of an Airbus A380 cockpit! (I'm not 100% positive if that thing with a red ring is a compass though...)
I guess, it's almost all digital now. Better not leave that GPS cell phone at home. :D
I don't know, everything seems to point that there wasn't even the most basic form of navigation. Memo to all F-22 pilots. Carry pocket compass in case of emergency.

Ok, now I can believe a story. AFAIK F-22 belongs to these new type of "unstable" fighters, meaning that if ALL computers crash, you cannot control it by stick anymore.
What I mean, is that the old-school fighters were like a ball inside a bowl - if you let go of the ball, it returns to the bottom --> control restored. Computer controlled fighters: Consider the bowl upside down and place the ball on the top, with your computers keeping it from falling. Computers fail --> ball drops.

It's not so much that you can't control it manually. Rather that it's really fucking hard, and you have to be a hell of a pilot to pull it off, and even then you'll be investing all your concentration in keeping it level, so you can forget about any complex manoeuvres. Fighters have been getting increasingly inherently unstable for decades, because an unstable aircraft can manoeuvre much, much faster than a stable one.
I'm sure they have one in a survival kit. But I'm sure the survival kit is probably not accessible until after ejection. :P
Hm, not sure if they can access their pick-nick baskets during flight or if they have to crash first. They do have a lot of pockets in their jump suits though.
