The day the earth stood still

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
So we went out and saw it yesterday, It was enjoyable, I rather liked Keanu, and any movie with Jennefer Connely is worth seeing. it was however not a GREAT movie.
My first thought at the end of the movie was.. "Did Al Gore write this?" it's a rampant advertisement for environmentalism, i also found the pacing to be incredibly slow, parts of the movie just seemed to drag on forever. ALso, when Keanu actually says "Klaatu Barada Nikto, it's so quiet, and there is so much music and SFX that you can't hear what he said! if i didn't know thats what he was saying, i'd have missed it completely!
To be honest, my reaction on seeing it was 'meh'

It was good, the cgi was great, but Keanu was playing Keanu again, and the story just seemed to lack any depth to it. At no point did I ever doubt the outcome, or even get close to the edge of my seat. Overall it was rather disappointing, I expected a lot more

I thought it was enjoyable but nothing special.

Worf

A friend of mine who does a perfect impression of Keanu went to a screening in L.A. of Constantine.

He somehow managed to approach him and said with his best Keanu impression.

"So what are ya tryin' to say that I can dodge bullets."

So Keanu's Reeves turns around and says.

"Your a real asshole ya know that."

Haha that's a pretty good comeback on Keanu's part. I bet actors must get sick to death of folk coming up to them and doing stuff like that

Messiah saw it yesterday. It was as the Worf says. Enjoyable and very non special.

The day the audience sat still... :D

I kinda liked it, it reminded me of the Spielberg remake of War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise. I would put TDTESS in the same category, while each movie stands on its own feet, they are most definitely cousins.

Just seeing Jennifer Connelly is worth the price of admission. You just want to run up to her and hug her. :D The kid (Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith) was an annoying brat (he probably got that role down to perfection) and we have seen quite enough of those lately.

I liked how the SFX were there but not really that big of a deal, as they should be. The elemental (robot) was actually well executed for the most part.

I suppose the subdued flavor of the film has put off some of you and I guess I expected something more as well. The environmental message is there, but it didn't say, go buy a Prius and save the world (get a Honda Civic instead).
• Huge advert for enviromentalism...OK, I can deal. It touched on other flaws humans have, but that was the major one.

And what the hell was with the kids 180 in under 30 seconds? "Yay! I'm a fraktard! Frak you all!"
...
"I'm lost, can you help me, I want my mommy who I suddenly love, even though I just got the military to kidnap her!"

I wanted to punch him in the face.

I hated the kid. It made the film unbearable to watch. The rest was pretty good, although kinda flawed logic considering new evidence suggests humankind is not killing the planet, merely removing some resources such as oil. Global warming. More like, global warning.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Well we're not killing the planet in the slightest. After all, it will still be here long after we've wiped ourselves out
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
The barren rock yes, but it will be unliveable, whatever our uncle George C says
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Life manages. ;)

say that to poor venus.

So humans and a lot of the life that we know gets wiped out, life will adapt and something else will come along. Earth wont become like Venus, though we may leave it a lot more radioactive than it is now
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Life survives in places on Earth that are far more extreme than the conditions on Venus.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
I do know that, I did a paper on bacteria surviving in nuclear reactors a couple of years ago, but rebooting the evolution of life on earth is pretty much similar to the destruction of the planet. After all, another mass will form out of the debris if it is blown up..
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
But it will still be life, and it will, at the cellular level, probably be very similar to how it is now.

As far as I can see, the atmosphere of Venus is composed mainly of carbon dioxide mixed with clouds of sulfuric acid and thus does not leave much opportunity for life as we know it to develop. Furthermore the surface pressure is estimated as being 92 times that found on Earth. Surface temperatures vary around 460°C, which is far more than most if not all life can take.

I'm not sure we have the means to destroy all life on Earth, although we may be able to make it uncomfortable if not inhospitable to ourselves and the other creatures if we keep going at it at this pace. We'd have to move our planet off its current orbit, increase surface pressure and temperature quite drastically to make it anything close to what Venus is today.

So Venus is a bad analogy.

I think the operative words are 'life as we know it'. I'd be mightly surprised if we dont find some form of life as we 'dont know it'. I know it'll be easier to search for similar lifeforms, I just am rather sceptical life elsewhere need have taken the same route
