I love the bit with the giant monster destroying buildings in the distance while they all stand on the roof and watch, drinking beer.
Oh wait, that's Cloverfield. Someone pointed the 1080p link at the wrong place...
You know, I was thinking the trailer DOES remind me of Michael Bay....
I've never liked Kirk and I doubt I will in this movie but I'll go see it cause Quinto is awesome.
To be honest, the show has never really been about Kirk... Spock and McCoy always stole the show. It's a bit like saying Babylon 5 was never about Sheridan or Sinclair, but actually about Londo Molari and G'Kar.
Shatner's acting (if you can call it that) has been the pun of jokes for decades now. So, yes, he's part of the furniture now, but he's the squeaky chair, not the comfy sofa. :D
Also, as nice as a DS9 movie may have been, the the franchise was the weakest (in terms of studio support) out of Star Trek as a whole. We would love it, be it would never get the treatment it deserved. I'm glad that it got some quick love in First Contact.
I'd like to see a DS9 movie but I also understand that going back to the original series is the best approach to start a revival. I'd probably have made the same decision if it was me making it.
I am trying SO h ard to go into this with an open mind, For some of you who grew up with Next Gen and/or DS9/Voy it may be easier, but for those of us who grew up with TOS, and nothing but TOS it's a little different IMHO. because Kirk, McCoy etc, WERE trek, there were no other characters, no other shows.
LIke i said, i'm trying ot have an open mind, and if i just saw this tralier and it was for some new SciFi movie, i might be extremely excited, but as it is, i'm just hopeful, that it's not going to suck.
Random ChaosActually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
My impression of the trailer: looks potentially good, but does not look "Star Trek"-like. Ergo, when I see this, I will most likely not treat this as Star Trek, but rather as an independent show utilizing characters and craft based on Star Trek.

Where have you been? What do you mean by "grew up with TOS?" Haven't you watched the other shows, at all, ever??? You know we have cell phones now, even cooler than what Kirk used as communicator back then. You should try one, it's pretty cool. :D

That's what a reboot is. As in James Bond, Batman, Superman... and many other more or less successful attempts.
I am underwhelmed.
I'm going to judge the movie by itself, not by some trailer. Even Dumb and Dumber was better than its trailer. It's only a teaser, so it's not like the movie is anywhere near done yet.
reminds me of transformers. Alot.

Good, because that movie was awesome.
On the other hand, the trailer for transformers was alot better than this one. This is.. meh. As has been said, Ill probably just watch it to see what Quinto can do with Spock.
Stingray, Yes i've seen the other series, and like them a lot, but you missed my point.
from the time i was born, until i was in my teens, there was nothing but TOS. so i personally have more of a connection to those characters, and seeing them done by other people bugs me a little bit, Rebooting the franchise doesn't mean replacing everyone per-se. they could have told a completely new story with enw characters.
I find it funny how everyone is ok with Kirk/Spok Et Al being replaced, but when rumor came down that we might be getting a B5 movie, with all new actors playing the parts.... well you know what happened with that. :)
But i am trying to keep an open mind, i enjoyed the tralier, and am going to go see the movie for sure. prolly enjoy it too.

Thats because we're not hardcore Trekkies, we are hardcore B5 fans :D
I'm getting a bit fed up of all these reboots and remakes to be honest! (the only exception being BSG) I'd much rather have had a new ship with a new crew with a NEW STORY, than a rehash of old stuff!
I kinda agree, but I LOVE what they did with Batman. :)
ShadowDancerWhen I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie."London, UK
Ok, Batman is the other exception :D
And I personally did like the Superman one, but not many other people did I dont think. It would still be nice for an original story once in a while tho
Oh, so you DO like the reboots, you just say you don't?
ShadowDancerWhen I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie."London, UK
Oh be quiet! I just want an original idea every once in a while ok! ;)
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
The trailer makes it look like an effects-over-substance action movie. I hope the actual movie is different, because that ain't Star Trek, rebooted or otherwise. :)
Simon Pegg sounds and looks great as Scotty, though.

Well I'll definitely have to wait for the movie before I form an opinion on that one! He may sound like him, but whether he is Scotty is another matter; he'll definitely have to prove to me he can play the role

Honestly, what's there to play? ;)
Exaggerating time it takes to repair broken systems, claiming to know the ship like the back of one's hand when in truth one doesn't, arguing about the laws of physics, formulating grammatically incorrect sentences and hiding bottles of genuine Whiskey everywhere on the ship. :D
i just don't see why every classic set of movies suddenly needs to get a reboot. sure batman and bsg were very well done and it gave other people the idea of toying with this and that but it seems to me like the time of teenage comedies is past and now it's reboot time for the next 5 years.
it's similar to the lord of the rings for me... the LotR movies weren't bad per se, but they never came close to what images i formed of various places and people by reading the book. i might not find the star trek movie too bad but i know inside me something will cringe everytime i see a random scene and think "but in TOS it looked like...."
The franchise was run into the ground. The idea of restarting trek is nothing new. JMS himself (with another whos name escapes me) wrote a treatment for a new origional trek series.
Ya either take what is broken and try to make something new, and get cry babies when they try and make a variation to better the characters or storytelling. Or just start over from scratch, respect but not be bound to existing materials.
Let me put it this way. Take a look at the science fiction from the mid 1990's including the failed series, and compare it to the science fiction now. In just 10 years the gains of maturity of the kinds of stories told between Next Generation and Battlestar are dumbfounding. Even watching Babylon 5 there are quite a few moments that make me cringe. People complain about the black market episode form BSG as being one of the worst. I offer them TKO.
And no one has answered my question on what is Trek. If Voyager trek? That series which is generally despised by many fans is about a quarter of all the star trek episodes out there. Not all the episodes are bad you might say? Throw in the bad 2.5ish seasons of Enterprise then.
What should of been done instead? More of the same? Really? You want Voyager and Enterprise?

The way I look at the LOTR series, Peter Jackson's version of the story was so complete in and of itself that it almost seems to be a parallel of Tolkiens story telling, almost as if both were allowed to observe the same series of events from afar, each using different mediums to express what they saw. Of course Tolkien's medium has the paradox of being a far more complete method of story telling while allowing much greater freedom of impression on the part of the reciever.

Neat trailer. Looked fun and different. I'm still very willing to give it a shot.

Do I care that its a Reboot? NO, its still fucking Star Trek and I'm glad we've got someone else other than Rick Berman doing the work!
So say we all!!! :D
