Question to comp guru's

My laptop that I take to work I think died, but I want to make sure I have a second opinion.

Symptoms:
1: Laptop powers up, cd-rom powers up, hard drive powers up, cpu fan turns on to full blast then to normal speed (typical for it's boot up)
2: Hard drive light does not come on
3: Screen does not turn on. (I check with flashlight to see if backlight burnt out)
4: Connected to external monitor and no signal
5: Disconnected hdd and extra memory, no change
6: Took out battery and only on AC, same symptoms.
7: No beeps indicating bios error
8: Pressing bios entry key and then pressing escape and pressing enter to cause a computer reboot is not sucessful. It doesn't reboot.
9: ran the battery down, plugged in ac adaptor, charge light does not come on.
10: Holding down power button will cause it to shut off like normal

So is it a lost cause?

First what model is it and brand?

    Basic questions:

Is there good ventilation in your office/room?
Does the AC adapter sound loud or is the battery hot to the touch?
  • It's a wally world special. Balance Digital Technology CN6555.

    Yes.
    No, no.

Well then there is very little to go on...It could be a short inside the mobo but I can't find any documentation on it or how to open it. That model is an 05' am I right? Its probably not worth going to Best Buy to get a tech to look at it, since it will probably cost you between $100-$300 depending on how nice the geek squad guy is.

Also make sure your surge protector is actually on. :D

    If it is...
    My opinion:

    New laptop

don't let your ferret pee on it!
  • Ugg... Well I am on a laptop now, but it's a 1400 dollar laptop, really don't want to take it into work.

It's an '05 model. It's the one I bought when Beth passed away. Took it to work every day, made tons of 3d models, wrote my stories, kept my time down, did 2d graphics, I did it all on the thing, so it's kinda of like loosing a pet...
  • 05 model...

    get an EEE PC! :D
  • Thoes things are cool, but I can't run my nes or snes or n64 games on it, the emulators are purly windows :p. Also I did story writing (open office will work for that), 2d/3d graphics... sorry as far as I know there is no linux 3dsmax, it was my at work gaming platform durring breaks.

there are netbooks that have windows and run it pretty well, but I don't think the netbooks have the power to do 2d/3d graphics.

I've played around an Acer Aspire One and while those types of sub notebooks are fine to get online, check email and do basic office work on the go, they aren't much good for anything else mainly due to their display size and integrated video card.

I'll probably get one of those at some point to replace my old backup desktop PC which as far as I'm concerned, will be the last traditional desktop I'll most likely ever own.

I can't speak for the N64 emulator, but the NES and SNES emulators work in Linux quite happily. I'm sure there is an N64 emulator for linux out there somewhere, too. :)
