This is a well written and well executed drama. The cast and crew did a great job. I have to confess that this isn't really my kind of movie and I only watched it because JMS was involved. I believe he got off to a good start even though he could have picked an easier subject matter. Well, considering the subject matters involved, I doubt we'll ever see a sequel. The movie itself wasn't exactly blockbuster gold but I guess it needed to be made anyway.
What this movie lacks is the obligatory happy ending. Even the epilogue leaves you hanging (no pun intended). There is only so much you can buy with hope.
I won't rate it as I have nothing to compare it to except maybe LA Confidential or Training Day, which both deal with police corruption/brutality but the stories don't really overlap. Changeling manages to keep violence to a minimum and most of it happens off camera.
I haven't seen anything like it in a long time. Gran Torino is quite a bit easier to swallow than Changeling. I guess what this movie lacks is a bit more Eastwood in front of the camera holding his signature .44 Magnum revolver. :D
I find it hard to recommend this movie to anyone. I guess it's too serious for its own good.

In that respect the movie is neither entertaining nor informative and thus hard to recommend to anyone. That doesn't mean it's bad, the courage of the reverend, the good cops and Christine Collins (standing in for all the mothers who've lost a child) are all very well portrayed, as are all the rotten apples in that particular LA community of the time.
As I've stated, it's not my kind of movie and I wouldn't go out of my way to go see it in a theatre.
(*) Of course one can explain this away by saying that the events as shown in the movie are taken from the viewpoint of Christine Collins.
