My Screensaver Dream

MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
I got one dream, to one day be able to create a B5 screensaver, where you can see the station, maybe the planet behind, maybe some ships coming and leaving the station...the station should be spinning, and dynamically lightning..so that when the clock on my computer is between 21-09 on the day, the station will turn to nightmode, and lights turned on....
Too bad I only can a little java...but someday...

"Babylon 5 was the last of the Babylon stations. There would never be another. It changed the future .. and it changed us. It taught us that we have to create the future .. or others will do it for us. It showed us that we have care for one another, because if we don't, who will? And that true strength sometimes comes from the most unlikely places. Mostly, though, I think it gave us hope .. that there can always be new beginnings .. even for people like us."

Hmm....now there is a fine idea....

    anyone want to write it?

I can do some ship modelling and texturing for it

Would be very cool... I might suggest that the camera changes position from time to time eg following a maintbot or a freighter otherwiase the screensaving part would rather go to waste!

I volunteer my new graphics engine for the task when I finish it. However, because there is virtually no reference material on the web about making graphics engines I'm making it up as I go along, so it probably won't be ready for a couple of years.

    This is a GREAT Idea!
The station could orbit the planet, too! How about this. THe planet Does indeed rotate aroudn the sun. So make it do that based on our calendar, as we have none for its reference. ALso, have ships come along and do things, like dock, launch shuttles which dock, or simply fly by. Maybe have an attack every so often. It's a truly neat idea.

Yes, a full system simulation! I likes it!

    hmm.....I want a screensaver not a game...hehe...

BUT...maybe it is possible to use the IFH engine, when it is released...everything in the that game is scripted..so maybe it is possible to use the same engine for an screensaver........

I would be much more keen on developing our own engine. That way I can learn how they work properly rather than stumbling around in the dark.

As it goes, i am currently investigating a 3d screensaver. The technology is hopefully java 2, using the shout3D rendering engine.

The idea was a screensaver that does summat funky based on times and also can be upgraded with modules over a regular period of time.

The idea of Babylon5 as a basis never occurred to me. a station orbiting a planet - both rotating and ships whizzing by.

Will look into this some more methinks...

I think OpenGL would be a abetter choice. That, or direct 3d. Or both

I have never heard of Shout3d, but it sounds eeeevil. I just like the idea of a full simulation. As in, everything. What about milod's engine? IIRC, it has full system simulation. Star-something It is existing, creator is a member of the forums, etc. Anyone getting the picture? Java's probably a bad idea, too, given the incredible slowness inherent in it. Good for net applications, bad for everything else. OpenGL's the best API if you want to port the screensaver to different systems. That, and I know some OpenGL, so I'd be able to work on it. Though I did just get my hands on the DX SDK....

Java 2 is ok these days. Shout3D is just a lightweight rendering engine for java. 100k oneoff download.

i am looking into this cos i don't know iirc or openGL or directX.

OGL is nice for 3d graphics.. however we must be wary of the requirements. If this idea comes to fruition I would very much like to use it on my work computer.. however it's an NT box with a crappy Intel video card that I dont think will do OGL, and deffinetely does not have the 8-16 megs that most "3d" screensavers need these days.

perhaps a bad idea but what is with the ifh engine? it is an open gl engine and looks very good so far
perhaps they can be used with permission from the sdf team

I would actually prefer a rendering engine that doesn't use Direct3D or OpenGL. Thats becuase my TV Tunner, when running, screws up 3d screensavers and results in my system crashing. And my TV Tunner software does not turn of the screensaver ...

But OpenGL is what I would recomend overall

Actually, you may be able to do this much quicker and easier if you use Macromedia Director. Version 8.5 looks like it's got a decent 3d engine to it, and they just released the MX version of it. You might have to play with the meshes a bit to optimize them for Director, but I believe the export feature is built into the newer versions of Lightwave and 3dStudio - and there are plenty of examples out on the net on converting Director files to screen savers, heck... I think there's even programs that'll do all the work for you.

hmm..this thread appeared again. I think also there is a "3d screensaver creator" program or something,dunno....

At midnight there would be at most one person there.

Actually, depending on your time zone and various relativistic factors, midnight could be thier busiest time. If I'm not mistaken, B5 runs on Earth Standard (and presumably for half the year, Daylight) Time, which is the same as Greenwich Mean Time. So Midnight for me would be about three or four in the morning on B5.
  • I would think this would be really easy to do if we could get permission from the IFH ppl..or if they were bored, they could probably crank it out in short order.

Anyway, i really like this idea...of course, we'll need to make maximal use of DX9 shaders, and have at least 5mil polys in the station alone And require a Geforce FX2 at least.
  • FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
I'd imagine a space station would be like an airport, there may be slow times, but there is never a time when it is not busy.

shouldn't be too much work using the IFH engine....wonder how many polys B5 station can have...

According to the show, there was a time each day when C&C was occupied by only one or two people or no one at all(remember at the beginning of season 2 when Sheridan gave his welcome speech?).
