S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl was on my list of must-own games since I first saw the trailer several years ago. After a few more delays and patches I finally took the plunge and got me a copy of this game and boy, this is the next best thing until Fallout 3 comes out.
I suspect the game will degenerate into another monster infested shooter at some point, but the way you get introduced into this living and breathing world is quite amazing. The game is getting a bit harder to find and has been in bargain bins for some time now. As far as I know, they've patched it to the point where it's stable and playable. The funny thing is, the game rewards you for playing realistically, so if there is something you wouldn't do in real life, don't try it in the game, it will only get you killed. :D (Like going one on one with a wild boar, or taking pot shots at an army patrol...)
For a FPS game, it has many RPG elements like reputation and inventory management. You even get hungry... but bathroom breaks are not included... at least I don't think they were implemented. :D
The modification boasts better bump mapping, adds real time calculated specular effects, improves full reflection vector calculations, and boosts soft shadow quality. At the same time of offering all these improvements and more, the mod improves efficiency of the game, increasing frame-rate by no less than 20%, which is no small feat. Using next generation (and NDA) hardware, The Inquirer claims that they see a 20-25% improvement in frame-rate.
$game_data$ = false| true| $fs_root$| gamedata\
It looks like I need to change that "false" statement to true so that the game uses the "gamedata" folder which does not exist on a fresh installation of the game.
I'm not really eager to break the game... I hope this is what the instructions want me to do.
I did notice a difference after drinking 3 bottles of vodka after getting too close to a radiation source though. If aiming is difficult at best when you're sober, it's even harder when you're drunk. :D (Vodka is one way to combat radiation sickness in the game, I can't vouch for its usefulness in real life.)
The random nature of many events in the game make it quite interesting, if you run out of ammo or medkits you can always reload a game and who knows what you'll find.
Or I was doing something wrong. :D
