Whilst NASA scientists are not claiming that life once existed on the Red Planet's surface, new data appears to indicate the "potential for life" more conclusively than the TEGA water results. The scientists probably just want to gather a bit more data and check their results, as any good scientist should. NASA has a thing for announcing preliminary results (they have to justify their funding to the public via big press briefings as soon as possible). It's nice to see the scientists involved taking the time to check properly this time.
"Life on Mars!" followed by "Oops, we made a tiny mistake" wouldn't go down so well.
That said, I can't wait to learn more about this :)

I just love the idea of Bush being briefed on possible life on Mars. I bet his first question would be "is it hostile?"
moron
It's quite elementary, actually.
And without the critical find of crackers, of what use are they?

What's that with rocket fuel? Have they been scooping within the rocket exhaust plume radius? That's just great, they've killed all life and now they act all surprised when they don't find any.
So after all this they are back to square one? I guess not, because they now know it's water underneath that layer of dirt.
