It would appear that the US President has been briefed by Phoenix scientists about the discovery of something more "provocative" than the discovery of water existing on the Martian surface. This news comes just as the Thermal and Evolved Gas Analyzer (TEGA) confirmed experimental evidence for the existence of water in the Mars regolith on Thursday. Whilst NASA scientists are not claiming that life once existed on the Red Planet's surface, new data appears to indicate the "potential for life" more conclusively than the TEGA water results. Apparently these new results are being kept under wraps until further, more detailed analysis can be carried out, but we are assured that this announcement will be huge…
Which is the way things should be. The stupid decision would be to release information without actually confirming it. The smart decision is to carefully process it and verify with absolute certainty that whatever has been found has actually been found.

Drat! They have found my secret base!
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
I agree. The more "big" the announcement, the more sure they need to be about it. It would of saved a lot of embarrassments.

The truth is, it's not just water, it's frozen urine. :D
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Coolness. Im trying not to get too excited about this. And as said, having to announce that they made a mistake about unveiling potential life on mars and that there is none would be far more stupid than making a few more tests..
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
All this is doing is feeding the conspiracy theorists. :D

The scientists probably just want to gather a bit more data and check their results, as any good scientist should. NASA has a thing for announcing preliminary results (they have to justify their funding to the public via big press briefings as soon as possible). It's nice to see the scientists involved taking the time to check properly this time.

I agree, it's best they get as much information as possible before they announce anything.

"Life on Mars!" followed by "Oops, we made a tiny mistake" wouldn't go down so well.

That said, I can't wait to learn more about this :)

Life on Mars... isn't that a tv show??? :D

A bad one, yes.

I just love the idea of Bush being briefed on possible life on Mars. I bet his first question would be "is it hostile?"

i bet its a bug or some sort of insectoid, those little thingys are capable of surviving anything.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
If its anything, its probably just an organic compound of some sort..
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
They found Chlorophyll... ;)
• I think they didn't find anything, thus all the secrecy.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Ack ack ack!
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Who knows, maybe they've found oil or cheese. :D
• DarthCaligulaDarthCaligula Elite Ranger
They found yo mama there. Cuz, you know, yo mama so..... yo mama.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
Everyone knows that the cheese is on the moon. However, if anything would interest the bush, it would be oil.. ;)
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I got it, I got it... if the Moon is made of cheese, then Mars must be made of SPAM!!!!

It's quite elementary, actually.

And without the critical find of crackers, of what use are they?
• WORFWORF The Burninator
It's a good bet if they found oil that NASA would suddenly get a massive budget boost.

Spam on Mars? Bloody vikings..
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Yes, SPAM, that would also explain the reddish color. Damn, it was so obvious.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
As it turns out, all the fuss was over the fact that Mars is less likely to have life.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
That's obvious too since you can't live from SPAM alone. :D

What's that with rocket fuel? Have they been scooping within the rocket exhaust plume radius? That's just great, they've killed all life and now they act all surprised when they don't find any.

So after all this they are back to square one? I guess not, because they now know it's water underneath that layer of dirt.
• MessiahMessiah Failed Experiment
A tad disappointing this perchlorate business..
• CurZCurZ Resident Hippy
The perchlorate story is a cover. They found the battlecrab.
• DarthCaligulaDarthCaligula Elite Ranger
I was wondering when someone would say something like that, Curz.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Funny, next thing you are going to claim is that some evil force is going to take over this current administration and then will dictate its will on the rest of the world by staging a coup.
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Who's got crabs?
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Sanfam and Callista, according to Zathrasbot.
