For the most part, I am relatively impressed. They stress that they trailer is created using nothing but in game graphics, and as a result it looks relatively decent.
What we do know. Looks like you can be a lot of different races in the Federation. Looks like the Borg are your largest enemy. Looks like there will be a mix of ship to ship combat as well as using your phaser in what can only be loosely described as hand to hand. Almost looks like Klingons are the enemy. There will be away teams.
What we do not know. If you control every aspect of your ship, or if it is broken up by having a "crew" of different people helping you to control your ship. Judging by the exterior views of the ships though, it almost looks as though in ship to ship combat your avatar becomes the ship itself, so that leads me to believe each ship is one person. In which case, that sucks. While I have openly said in the past that nothing would suck more than going into a big fight and your tactical officer goes latency dead, I did enjoy the idea of teamwork to run a single ship. With each character controlling their own ship, its just eve or wow or every other mmo.
Nitpicks on the trailer itself. There wasn't one Star Trek actor ANYWHERE who would do the voice over for this thing? One? Hell it would give it just a small amount of legitimacy if someone we recognized did it. They just had a talk with Leonard Nimoy its not like some of them aren't aware of it. Anyone?
Its Cryptic Studios alright. Some of hose visuals look like they are pulled right out of City of Heroes. That tells me they saved time by using existing code, which is why we already have a trailer when its only been relatively recently that they acquired the license for this.
Bottom line is, we will need more to make a decision, but its interesting enough to be looked at so far. Just need more info to make a decision.

What sharp eyes you have. In all the excitement, I didn't even read the article or check out the other material before posting the link. :D

I believe it was mentioned in a previous article that there are stations to be manned and if people are lost on the way, they are replaced by NPC's who know what to do.

I have to agree with you on that one, even Sid Meier got Leonard Nimoy to do voice-over work for his latest Civ4 TBS game. I guess they have to save money somewhere, but who knows, maybe they'll do it if they see they got a profitable game on their hands.

And creepy... the cat does look very creepy to me.
Overall looks pretty solid, voice over was lame but oh well.

I've been playing City of Heroes for nearly 3yrs now, so knowing that Cryptic are behind this actually does make me feel better about the prospects for this not sucking.
And it is still early days yet, so I think there's plenty of time for them to scrape up an actor or two to do voice overs and such

In this video, the guy talks about how every player gets their own ship and the crew is made up of NPCs. He compared the bridge crew to pets from other MMOs, you get to control them to an extent, upgrade their skills etc. Then there's the rest of the crew that have their own abilities but you don't have any control over them.
I don't think players make up the crew anymore though (but he did say players can visit each others ships), it seems the game went through a few changes when it switched developers. Except for that one thing, I believe it's for the better. I can highly recommend that video I linked to for more details, it seems like a game with potential and has a somewhat original take on the MMO genre.
One thing I noticed in the video: since when do warp nacelles leave little blue trails while the ship is travelling at sublight speed?
Gosh, Biggles, do they have to explain everything? Of course this is due to [enter technobabble here!] :D
Adapting Borg would be great, it's something that Star Trek games need to make them a scary threat. Elite Force kind of had it and it was a nice touch.
You would probably need engineering skills (either your own or your npc crew) to counter it.

It's called a "HUD." See I-War for implementation details.

My assumption is that this was done to ease estimating a vessel's speed from a distance and to make fights look more dramatic.
I wonder if the Borg adapt. And if so, how they do.
