Star Trek Online Returns

WORFWORF The Burninator
Link

Some screenshots are up and they've released a few details. The original concept of the game was to simulate a new sector but it seems like they're going with the entire alpha quadrant now. Apparently players can be a Starfleet or Klingon captain. Interesting.

Not sure I like the new look of the ships (there's a sleeker looking Defiant in several screenshots). Okay it makes sense that they would evolve in the time between the series/movies and when the game takes place but I'd rather fly around in the ships I know.

Diablo 3, Star Craft 2 and now this fraggin' awesome!

I'm not sure that this is even a "defiant" class vessel. In the first screenshot you see a close-up and it looks more like a cluster of space stations.

Those shots are not much more encouraging than what we've seen before. I wouldn't hold my breath. This is a very ambitious project after all.

I don't think any of those screenshots feature ships. Just stations of some kind.

Well Cryptic made city of heroes so at least they have some experience making an other than fantasy MMO. I played heroes for a while and it was fun, just not well thought out in terms of content. You pretty much leveled and that was it, there was nothing else to the game but grinding levels. As I understand it eventually they added more content, but it was relatively too little too late.

I won't hold my breath as this is the what, 3rd developer to get a hold of this license?

The top right, it looks Defiant like to me.

Only ship I see is the Enterprise E on the main Page. There are some sort of symetrical emmitter arrays in some of the shots. In others, there is just a sensor array with a station that looks like Utopia Planitia in the background.

I forgot, Worf, you see the world with YOUR eyes.

Well, if it looks Defiant like to you, then that's your prerogative. My apologies. :D

Why are the graphics so cartoonish?

Mass-appeal. Too realistic and it loses "audience"

    Didn't stop EVE-Online.

But WoW is bigger. Thats probably their reason.

I actually prefer a stylized look. I have a hard time seeing objects in games with graphics that attempt to be realistic.
  • WORFWORF The Burninator
Ultra realistic graphics = ultra powerful computer needed to play it (and probably Vista too).

Don't let the cartoon style fool though. You can be sure it will need a strong computer.

As for WoW, well, you seriously believe Star Trek will appeal on such a large scale? No. EVE is much higher regarded among veteran MMORPG players.

And as far as I'm aware, WoW didn't start out with one quarter of the world's population already addicted to it. If they make the game interesting, they might just have a winner.
  • HuntSmackerHuntSmacker Firstones Ambassador to Starcraftia
If that's true then why are nearly all Star Trek related games flops? Even my favourite Trek games have such small fanbases, even the ones with great reviews. That and last time I checked, the whole genre has been taking a pounding in recent years from disasters such as Nemesis and Enterprise. Sure, I love Trek just as much as the next Trekkie but I know when to admit that it's not as big as I'd like it to be.

Warcraft 3 did have quite the following. Combine that with Blizzards other games (Starcraft and Diablo ;)) and youve got quite the following..

its probably going to be DX10 like Stargate Worlds. Damit I am going to have to spend more for upgrades.
  • WORFWORF The Burninator
    Stargate Worlds is DX10 only?

Two new screenshots of STO inside a Gamespot preview article.

And yes, there are ships visible this time around, two Federation ships and something that looks like a Borg Ball... :D

The first impression was very misleading, I hope they won't make that mistake again.... ever.
