Caprica Details

WORFWORF The Burninator
I didn't realise the show (or at least the pilot) was so far along. I only read a tiny part of the article, I'd prefer to avoid the spoilers. I did find out however that it's due to air in december.

Wow, I knew it was pretty far along already but had no idea trailers were out. [SP]Based on the info out there it looks to me like this thing is already starting on the wrong foot tying it into the BSG universe. So now the first cylon is a skinjob clone of some dead girl? WTF was so wrong with the original idea of the creation of robotic AI and robotic cyclons? This really just wreaks of Sci-fi trying to steer clear of techie geared scifi to more mainstream drama. Well I'll wait for the show for my final verdict but I have a bad feeling where this is going.[/SP]

[sp]Remember, this is just the pilot. The robotic ones will likely come in the series proper.[/sp]

Cool! Something new to look forward too :)

My [spec=for caprica plot]The create this skinjob but then due to public outcry they're forced to backtrack and create the 'toasters'. Toasters find out they've been made deliberately stupid and rebel, and cue first war.[/spec]

The problem with starting with skinjobs is that it undermines the whole current BSG universe. The cylons start experimenting with organics by creating very crude forms of hybrids like we saw in Razor. The BSG miniseries starts out with the colonials being completely shocked that cylons have created completely organic beings. If the cylons did start out as organic units originally and they had the technology to transfer an entire consciousness to a cloned body before the first machine AI was created then that would mean it was in fact colonial scientists that created cylon ressurection from the very beginning. If that was the case it should have been no surprise later when they capture Leoben at the Ragnar station.

I'm putting my money on the show using human actors to represent a lot of the cylon creations for the simple reason scifi doesn't want a show with robots in it. It's too geeky for them. Sci-fi channel is too cool for science fiction these days.

More than that, BSG is a very expensive show to produce. I think Sci-Fi wants to keep that universe going but without having to spend the money, so we get a much cheaper to make spin-off that lacks the very things that made Galactica appealing in the first place.

[sp=Caprica Logline]If you were a rich cyberneticist who used ripped-off technology to clone your dead daughter and then things went Horribly Wrong™, would you tell anyone about it?

If anything, this proto-human-cylon might explain a few things, if some elements of her survive into the final product and aren't completely buried, doused with bleach, and set on fire, such as their desire to assume human form (a subconscious desire based on being first made in that form) and their monotheistic religion.[/sp]

There's that but I don't think that's really the only reason. Execs from the sci-fi channel have in so many words said more or less said what I did. They want to get away from more traditional sci-fi and become more drama oriented hoping to have broader appeal. Just look at all of their shows and pilots in the last few years to see the trend. Eureka, The Lost Room, Dresden Files are not exactly moving in the direction of what I'd expect from a science fiction channel. Caprica is really looking like it will be getting its heavy dose of this formula.

Yeah but sadly it will suffer from the Sci-Fi Attachment effect. Even if it's an entirely new direction, the fact that is it related to Galactica will already limit the audience.
