I was just reading 2001, And I had totally forgotten that in the book, its not Jupiter that they end up going to, The monolith was from Saturn, More specifically Iapetus one of its moons.
And the real freaky thing about Japetus is that back when he wrote it, Arthur C. Clarke was guessing about why it was brighter on one side than the other, and the whole thing with a glassy smooth side with a black dot (the monolith) in the center.
Of course, when NASA finally got close up photos of Japetus, they found it was brighter on one side because it was glassy smooth on that side.
And there was a black dot in the middle.
When they got the picture, someone sent the prints to Clake with a note that read "Thinking of you...".

Heh, i wasn't aware of that, Great book tho, good movies as well, i didn't care for 2063 very much, and i still haven't gotten around to reading 3001.
