Was working at CERN for one year in 2004, so looking forward to the start-up :)

Hmm, I can't see you using your kite in there... 11000 revolutions per second. :D

Cool! What did you do there?

The same thing he tries to do every night: take over the world!
• MundaneMundane Elite Ranger
Didnt do much actually :)..was a "Technical Student", programming Python....

Really, now they want to take pictures of particles with a large digital camera. No wonder we are getting nowhere. Who cares about pictures of particles? What a waste. They should take pictures of Megan Fox instead, now that would be more interesting. The science of hotness. Imagine an infinite source of energy. This could save the world. :D

I think he's in love folks! :D
• According to Pakistani news, we have greater problems... And its not caused by LHC, but Norwegians.

God damn Norwegians, stop messing with lazers!
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Thanks for that. I haven't seen a good conspiracy theory rant in quite some time! :D
• It's not the Norwegians, it's the eeeeevil US scientists on Norwegian soil.

Good to know why we've been getting so much snow lately. Must be working. Go US!
• it look dangerous

It looks almost as frightening as that rocket launch site inside that volcano in one of the earlier James Bond movies.
• E.TE.T Quote-o-matic
Yeah right...
This is just the weather which was normal 15-20 years ago: Since halfway December there has been only few hot -10C days and average is between -15 and -20C with -25C starting to become common lately.
Only thing abnormal is abnormally hot weather in northern Finland: From -5 to -10C.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Not sure how the weather in Finland relates to the LHC, but who am I to complain?! :D

Go [insert your favorite sports team], go!!!
• Maybe he was relating to Norwegian weather machine? Just maybe...
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
This "High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) radar facility in Ramfjordmoen, Norway" is not a "weather machine" nor is that article scientific in any shape or form. This nonsense could have been lifted from some 25 cent tabloid in a train station news stand.

I guess when in doubt make stuff up.

Where is the chaos? As far as I can tell it's all concentrated in Haiti right now. I don't know if anybody noticed, but the Palestinians and Israelis are coming along nicely. There hasn't been anything in the news lately, or has there? So maybe if nobody talks about the Middle East, there will be peace after all. Where there is no bad news, there's hope.
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I guess, we can soon all breathe a little easier again... the LHC is set to shut down yet again.

I have the distinct impression this project feels a lot like a hobby to these people. They spend more time fixing the darn thing, than using it. :D
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Well that's one hobby I'd like to have to work on ;)
• CurZCurZ Resident Hippy
Considering the complexity of a project like this, I'd say it's a testament to the abilities of the people working on it that it has "only" suffered the setbacks it has.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Indeed. It is also "only" the most complex piece of machinery ever assembled. Yes its frustrating to see it not working at full potential, but just the fact that they can power it up at all is hugely impressive

I don't buy that for one nanosecond. :D
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Nor do you want to. The place costs billions!
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
I'd start my own space program if I had that kind of money... there is only so much fun to be had from smashing particles.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Are you saying that smashing things is boring?
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
If you find it boring then clearly you arent smashing the right kind of things
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
Well, they aren't aiming those particle beams at anything worth smashing. :D

But who knows, maybe this research will lead to the discovery to the first PPG. But it won't happen if they keeping breaking the darn thing. I feel like they've built a subway and the trains keep derailing... very frustrating.

•
Nor do you want to. The place costs billions!
Well, according to Wikipedia the Finnish fusion power plant costs a bit more, and even provides electricity! The nuclear thing is a typo, do not trust Wiki blindly. Trust me.
