I used to work at the mall
    Selling robots wall to wall
    Ones that cleaned and entertained
A robot chef, a robot maid
Then one night on a dare
    I made my robots self-aware
    And it wasn't really planned,
But now the robots rule the land
And we're happier than we've ever been

There was fighting, sure, at first
When the bots conquered the Earth
All the people thought we're doomed
That by robots we'd be consumed
But we humans had no chance
Robots stunned us with a glance
And after the human's final stand
It was the robots ruled the land
Now we're happier than we've ever been

That's the last war that we've seen
    By decree of robot queen
All the studies now do show
    That at ruling, humans blow
    Law's more carefully applied
    With a logic-loving guide
    Now with an impartial hand
It's the robots rule the land
Now we're happier than we've ever been

Even without any AI involved, armed robots are worrying. It becomes a lot easier to just pull the trigger and get on with your mission when you're sitting at the other end of a remote control link then when you're staring someone in the face.
  • Just wate until a game gets loaded into a war machine.

By what I define as a robot, this are about as much as robot as a self-propelled lawn mower. These are machines that are responding to commands from a remote location, not machines making self-determined decisions based inputs from the environment. If one of these remote controlled units pointed the a barrel toward an in correct target, its an issue with the control system, not the robot making an incorrect judgement

That said, Biggles makes a good point, by moving the point of judgement away from the intensity of the battle, it may allow the soldier to make decisions without the benefit of human interaction. Of course by the same token, without having to deal with the immediate fear of danger, it may also allow the soldier to take a moment longer to make a decision. With a remote controlled vehicle, esp one resistant to small arms fire, one might have a few more seconds to analyize and react to a situation.

Even if it ain't too resistant, it expendable and replaceable. So even if it means risking destruction, investigating first and shooting later *ought* become an option.

Whether that actually happens, doesn't naturally depend on the remote drone, but its operator and their work environment.

This kind of a tool seems potentially quite useful for charting out dangerous places... unless of course there's an expectation of needing to communicate with people, in which case an armed robot is definitely not a good bet.

P.S. I wonder how easily their communications systems are jammed? If it's not meant to be vulnerable, it better have some mighty fine randomly keyed wide-spectrum frequency hopping radio, and properly encrypted+authenticated data links.
