Spoiler: Or, it could just be that TV shows such as this tend to focus on "important" characters. Therefore it stands to reason that when a main character turns out to be a Cylon, he or she would hold some power. ;)
Actually, they relied primarily on Zoic for the first two seasons for the space stuff, and then Atmosphere handled it for the first quarter or so of season 3, and then they switched to the in-house team for everything.
That's oversimplifying it a bit. They always had a mix of effects companies along with an in-house team, but that's more or less how the lion's share of the work was distributed.
I'm also going to add that I seem to often lump Atmosphere and Zoic together, though not in a way that is of detriment to either. Both do a fantastic job.
Spoiler: OK I gotta say this is the first time I really had an issue with the after intro teaser bits. They showed the airlock cycling with no viper in it. After seeing that it was obvious someone was getting flushed out. If I hadn't seen that bit I would have actually thought for a second Tory was going to save her and Cally would walk away. I knew this was it for Cally as soon as she went in there. I was actually expecting her to flush Tory out with her and see if she'd ressurect somewhere.
Spoiler: Yeah, the second I saw the Sci-Fi commercial for this episode last week I knew she didn't kill herself, and the spoiler I posted was false. I wonder if they deliberately distributed versions of the script in which it actually was a suicide.
I didn't watch the preview, because they tend to ruin things.
Spoiler: Seems like it. And not only that, but has the incredible Cylon strength we've never seen before in any of the Final Five. That woman nearly defied the laws of physics for the finishing move against Cally. So it seems as if her subconscious programming (or inner nature, whatever we're calling it) may involve "liberating" or otherwise preserving the Hybrid offspring of Cally and Galen? Oh god, I can't figure out where this is going to end up! AHHHH!
I'm still pissed off, and I feel this is the only smiley that can appropriately represent my current feelings:
Spoiler: Meh... Cally had it comming. I liked her but that character outlived its usefulness long ago much like Kat. Any screen time she gets just detracts from more important things. All the baby scenes are just distracting. In proper BSG style characters don't fade away, they are killed off. Besides, they had to open the way up for Tyrol to get back with Boomer now that they are both cylons. The next character to die should be Dualla. She stopped mattering after Billy died. Now that they're divorced she should be killed off.
I wouldn't say Tory has become evil but she certainly seems to be savoring her new found purpose, even if she doesn't know what it is yet.
Spoiler: I tend to side on "Evil" due to the way the scene was shot and the abruptness of the act. Once she had the child, She was quick to dispense with the incapacitation and seemed to wait until Cally was just about awake to finish things up. But I do agree with her mindset.
Baby scenes will never end. Rumor has it that the series will conclude with every sentient being in known existence being reduced to infant form, thus spawning the spin-off "Battlestar Babies!"
I do not agree with Cally, though. First, I thought she was adorable and thus deserved continued existence. And while she may not have served a purpose, her character could have been shoved peacefully into the background and kept there. Of course, that isn't dramatic. And I do actually see some possibility for a new relationship for Galen, but not quite the same as you. Some subtle implication was made over the course of this episode that she had some interest, contrary to the "There's no affair" business being trotted around. Perhaps this will be developed further, perhaps not.
I'm still waiting for the line at the beginning of the next episode:
Tory: "I'm sorry about Cally...Oh, and here's your kid."
Galen: "...Why do you have my child?"
Tory: "He was sitting outside the launch tubes. You know children these days."
Galen: "Why were you in the Hangar?!"
Tory: "Look over there, It's the last Cylon!"
*Tory Runs off*
Spoiler: Tory seems to have picked up on "How To Be A Cylon" from watching Six in the miniseries- Coldhearted, goal-oriented, hedonistic, religious, and sociopathic. It's funny, though. She's with a crew that, all things being equal, either would have done what she did themselves or not had a problem with it in another situation. Cally could have sold them out, so Tory killed her to save the FF from her poor judgement. How can Col. Killed-his-wife and CPO "Crashdown-died-a-hero" argue with that without hypocrisy?
Saving the baby could be some latent Cylon programming (she seems to be drinking the Kool-Aid to the greatest degree, right down to conforming to the original Cylon stereotypes), or could just have been the pragmatic decision to only kill when necessary— Nicky isn't going to be telling anyone that daddy's got preferentially ionizable silica relays in his cells anytime soon.
I was about to say which running plotlines I really want to see more of, but then I just realized I wanted to see all of them. Still, in order— How Natalie and her faction survive Cavil's ambush (One, we didn't see them die or their ships explode catastrophically, and two, I doubt she'd be part of the full-court hype machine for season four if she was just going to pop up in two episodes then die), what adventures Captain Starbuck (who's, ironically, more of an Ahab at this point, while her own Starbuck remains to be seen) and her less-than-merry crew will have searching for Earth, and Representative Lee and his battles for constitutionality.
Also, I really loved Adama visiting Roslin in sickbay and reading her a murder mystery. Nice callback to the first common ground they really had. Which, I suppose, is also a counterpoint to the callback to Tyrol joking that "it's nice to be small" for Cally in the miniseries when she ended up pretty much destroying her life by virtue of being small enough to fit between the walls.
Spoiler: Well, I understand the potential motivations for Tory & Co., but it seems that this particular instance would indicate less than good intentions. We will have to wait until the next episode to see how things pan out.
Barring surprise survival of the seemingly doomed Cylon vessels (Not that such a scenario would be unique in this series), my bet is on the presence of a friendly Resurrection Ship within proximity of the destroyed basestars as a fallback in the event of just this happening.
I'm more curious about the presence of Anders aboard Starbuck's ship. Being one of the final five, I can't help but think of the ways in which he could influence the search for Earth.
Spoiler: Cally is the last Cylon :) I do agree though, she was way too cute to die, I do take a little bit of issue with the way it happened, the final 5 are supposed to be fundamentally different, and yet, here is Tory acting just like all the other skinjobs we've seen. how is she any different from the rest of them.
You sunsabitches! You did it, you really did it! Spoiler: How sad that, after all Cally's been through, she was relegated to an end best befitting a Xenomorph. Her end was more bothersome than say, Billy (who died quasi-heroically, if foolishly), or Jammer (who shared a similar fate, but wasn't well-known enough to be as meaningful as Cally). Oh well...on to the next casualty. :(
Spoiler: I really liked the way the scene where Cally was talking to the Chief after she found out that he was a Cylon was filmed. Having Galen out of focus in the background, (to show, presumably, that she was high on medication) with Cally not facing him was so well done. Then she beat him with a wrench... blunt force trauma is always a crowd pleaser. ;)
Also, who else things that the Tyrol is going to be the one to somehow "out" the final 5 to the rest of the fleet? I do. Probably not next week, but eventually. :)
And I agree that Six and her merry band are still alive. Good. :vorlon:

Spoiler: I like the way his voice was distorted. It sounded, well, mechanical.
Like the rest of you I'm pretty shocked they killed Cally. I will say I always felt her character started off ok but then became a tad annoying and just drifted along. But I did assume she would be around for longer as the whole 'your baby is a hybrid' could have been an interesting angle. I do think this will now send the Chief off the edge a bit. In the 'Galactica Supper' picture he was holding a knife. Mixed in the scenes in this episode he was cutting himself with a knife and tasting his own blood. I also 2nd that he may turn on the others but this may depend on Tory. She has changed (maybe having sex with Baltar does that to a woman :D) big time. She has embraced her new found identity, much more so than the others. Tigh is trying to ignore and bury it. Tyrol is lost. She may take Cally's place but it may just turn out that she was protecting the baby and themselves by killing her. I do agree that she is evil, which makes one wonder where the final 5 stand.
It was interesting that Adama let Starbuck have some of his best crew for this find earth mission. Also interesting that Boomer and Anders are along for the ride. I have a feeling Anders will help Starbuck find earth. Maybe their tattoos hold the key :p
Going back to the opening episode I found it interesting that when Tigh shot Adama, he shot him in the eye. It was the same eye that Tigh lost (as in the right eye). Don't know if that means anything.
Spoiler: I've had a feeling the grim reaper has been knocking on Cally's door for some time now and it became a lot clearer when Tyrol was outed as one of the 5. She's now in too deep. Married to and the mother to the son of one of the pivotal final cylons. There's no way she can just fade into the background as another grease monkey like she used to. Eventually she's going to ask questions and pick up on something not being right with her husband.
After seeing the contrast so far between Tigh and Tory I'm wondering if the 5were the original cyclons which created the other seven and maybe there was a whole vorlons vs shadows sort of thing going on. Part want to steer the seven into being evil and destroy humanity and the other want to join them. The seven probably got fed up and boxed them away.
Spoiler: I'm curious about how this whole Cylon diaspora thing came about myself, too. The Sig Seven seem to believe that the Final Five were set apart all the way back when the Centurions first decided to take human form and created the twelve models. Maybe they decided to divide the models, send some to live amongst the humans, and some to develop their own culture as part of some experiment. But then why would the Five be programmed to break cover once they arrived at the Ionian Nebula, of all places? Perhaps there was actually something in the nebula that caused the Final Five (or so) to activate, something that the Cylons didn't take into account when they were made.
There's also the question of why the Final Five are appearing in the Opera House. I supposed that could be as simple as D'anna seeing them because of some subconscious memory of them, brought out from been so close for so long, combined with run-of-the-mill premonitions. That would also explain Roslin's vision, though not why Athena, Caprica, and Balter were also there. Come to think of it, I wonder if Baltar saw the vision as well. The Baltar there was dressed as Virtual Baltar, but that doesn't mean anything. Caprica Six was wearing one of Virtual Six's outfits (though with the sort of befuddled and nervous face Virtual Six wouldn't be caught dead wearing).
Finally, did anyone else notice that the constellation Orion was clearly visible in the scene where the Cavils ambushed Natalie's faction? I checked in Celestia, and it remains recognizable up to about five hundred light years from Earth, so both Fleets seem to be at least that close. Assuming six lightyears a jump and three jumps a day, they're only about a month's travel away from Earth, tops, if they only knew exactly which direction to go. I actually feel kind of sorry for them, being so close, yet so far away.
Wow...... Spoiler: yeah I was totally not expecting them to kill her. It makes sense plot-wise, but it's still a shock. I for one liked her character and not just because she's shares my name.
This explains the rumor Sanfam and I heard that they were going to try to get Boomer and Tyrol involved again which Aaron Douglas was apparently very opposed to. I thought that rumor didn't make any sense while Cally was still alive, well, there we go.
I also noticed both the 1701D right away (Ron Moore worked on Next Gen, so it's highly likely to be on purpose) as well as the constellation Orion. As a matter of fact, the moment I saw Orion, I half expected the camera to pan out and show us that they were in orbit around Earth. I honestly didn't realize you could still see Orion as we see it so far out.
David of Mac: Spoiler: Nice call connecting the "nice to be small" with Cally's downfall. I had completely forgotten about that.
There was a LOT of neat stuff like that in this episode to look out for. I really like it when shows throw puzzles and riddles and clues and hints at us, but then I've always been a puzzle freak. :D
Spoiler: Was there actually a rumor of Tyrol and Boomer getting back together? I mentioned that but I was just taking a guess. I did hear that Boomer is supposed to be comming back pretty big this season which makes me quite happy. It always nagged me how she mostly faded away after Cally shot her and she ressurected. We never really got to see how she went from hating what she was created for and sent to do, to becoming a pretty hardcore pro-cylon. She was way too important to be swept under the rug until this late.

Tory did not just frakkin' kill Cally! That was gut wrenching. :(
So...I guess Torry is evil?
