Arthur C. Clarke, dead at age 90

Rogue TraderRogue Trader Somebody stop him...
The AP is reporting this right now. I bet CNN will have it soon as well. Interested in seeing what the BBC says since I believe he was knighted some time ago.

I've been a big fan of his for as long as I can remember (my 4GB thumb drive is named Clarke) and even though he was 90 I'm very saddened that this great man has gone.

And I was just watching 2001 the other day on Universal HD....

I say he was the last of his ilk, Heinlein, Assimov, Clarke, ... they were the Sci-Fi writers i grew up with.

I just saw the news as well.

    Here's BBC's article about it: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/7304004.stm

Another great writer and inspiration for the science fiction world is gone. :(

But he lived a long life and made a lot of great stories.

Good Bye Arthur, 90 is not too shabby

It is quite a loss :( One of the greatest creative minds in all of Science Fiction has rejoined the stars.

The sad thing is, what is the new guard but an inferior collection of generally dimmer minds?

A noble life that'll live on through his amazing stories.

    Sad news indeed. :(
Ray Bradbury is still around. I'd say he's the last one left.
  • I hate to say this, but I and my roommate were under the impression he was long dead.

I just saw Clarke mentioned in the IEEE Spectrum March issue. He got a visit from an IEEE contributor while being hospitalized in Colombo, recuperating from a back injury.

To say Im really upset is an understatement. He was probably the greatest literary influence of all for me. I remember reading 2001 when I was 8, and my love of sci-fi grew from there. He will be missed

He didn't live to see the adaptation of his book "Rendez-vous with Rama": http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0134933/

A book if I recall correctly that includes an alien ship design that has a lot in common with the layout of the habitat section of B5.

Yes, they're both the O'Neill Cylinder concept, although Clarke came up with it independently.
  • A real scientist and a good writer. That will be much missed.
