This former NASA astronaut isn't the right kind of scientist, so feel free to ignore the article, but wouldn't it be ironic if the only thing holding off a mini-ice age were our planet killing carbon emissions?
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
The people who run around screaming "global warming is coming!" are idiots who don't know what they're talking about. Any scientist worth their publishing history talks about "climate change," which can include ice ages just as well as the whole planet turning into a desert.
One of the scientist on TED say 'Global Warming' is a bad term.
If it is getting cooler then the pols are really gaining ice. The glaciers are growing the North West passage is even harder to get a ship through. Witch isn't happening, just the opposite as a matter of fact.
That is worse then the people who say The Holocaust never happened.
But then, some one here said it is pressure that controls temperature. So Ice Ages are imposable.
I don't quite see how this relates to anything beyond demonstrating that the greenhouse effect keeps things warm. Please explain why a remark is posted rather than just posting. :P
The way I see it, we need to postpone the next ice age, indefinitely, if we are to survive as a human race.
That doesn't mean we should keep on wasting our resources or destroying our environment in the process.
The question remains, what are we to do? Taking the wrong decision can be as bad as taking no decision if not worse. Biofuels are one bad choice, as they compete directly with food production. Even if we find ways to make them out of non-food plants, it's still a bad decision as the search for profit will get in the way. I mean, look at the narcotics problem as an example.
Ice ages take around 100,000 years from onset to glacial maximum. How we in our short little lifespans would see it is that the average summer would become shorter by only a few days. Humanity survived ice ages before.
It is within the realm of possibility that the melting of the north ice cap would trigger another ice age rapidly. By exposing that much liquid water to the sun the amount of evaporation would increase drasticly. This would precipitate in the northern lattatudes. If the northern regions were still below freezing then this would fall as ice or snow on land. This would increase albedo driving down temperatures. By the time the ice cap reformed there would be a significant amount of glaciation. The speed of this scenario is under despute, but within a human lifetime is in the realm of possability.
So, if the last ice age ended 11,000 years ago, we shouldn't expect it for another 89,000 years?
That's assuming we don't factor in our activities into the odds of having it come in a bit earlier.
Ok, so the risk of an impending ice age is not on the top of our list as far as "staying the course" is concerned, unless we trigger it inadvertently by burning more fossil fuels.
Maybe we do need to build that orbital heat shield after all...
Not quite. If a 'natural' ice age were to start again right now it would, on average take a very long time to reach maximum. On the other hand ice ages end in about 10,000 years. You can see this in this graph (which shows the process for the southern hem at 50-100 million year cool down and then 10-20 kyear ):

One climatologist (whos name escapes me) proposed that we should be entering another ice age, however the first agriculture revolution, domestication fo methane producing animals, and forest cutting by our early ancestors put just enough green house gasses to prevent that cycle from happening. I haven't check up on what has happened sense that came out a few years ago nor do I remember the authors name to do a reverse citation.
The reason why our recent ice ages have happened, and not during the warmer period of the dinos, was the result of mountains. Back in the dino era the Earth was quite flat. Starting around 50 million years ago the Rocky mountains, the Alps, and the Himalaya mountains formed. In turn this increased rainfall in these areas and increased weathering. The formation of secondary minerals sequestered carbon from the atmosphere, causing global cooling.
In the reports I read on Ice Ages there caused by tilt of the Earth.
I've herd some worry that lots of ice milt will cool the oceans off to start an Ice age.
Things that are happening to the air that alters the natural cycle.
There is less light making it all the way down to the surface then there used to be. Jet contrails and other things are blamed.
It isn't raining as much as it should. Some blame the additives we put into the air.
Humans are putting more dirt in the air then nature would have.
Oceanic cooling? No. What we would see in the event of glacial melt, however, is a vast reduction in oceanic currents (both number and strength), which might foster both increased evaporation (more greenhouse gases, but also more cloud cover as mentioned by croxis) Depending on the level of cloud cover, there's a number of bacteria that thrive in these environments and generate waste that is hazardous to both our health and that of our food.

That is who is doing the most lying. I will believe scientist over politicians. Scientist over news organizations.
After summer 2006 northern Atlantic has been very active and blocked warm continental air masses from getting here.
Last summer was cold and rainy (and thanks to that there's hell lot of mosquitoes now) and it has continued similarly this year...
Except that there has been much more cold northern winds and because of that cold air there hasn't been really any rain after spring. (without that there would be still hell lot more mosquitoes)

One of our local politicians said there was no global warming and that global warming isn't increased by human actions.
Good chance he will be reelected.
If you haven't seen it yet, it's a BBC documentary called the "Great Global Warming Swindle"... :p
And if you haven't already guessed it, it's still all about money.

To show how much such a small amount of greenhouse gases alters the temperature of the planet's atmosphere.
