Anyone used it ?

IS it ok for a dinkus 3D app ?

I know my brother is using it in school for urban planning. Based on that, I suggested it to a friend that is doing set design for a local theater company and he seems to be doing OK with it. It is very basic, which is why I suggested it to him. He didn't have the time to learn Lightwave, AutoCAD, Max, Maya or whatever. Sorry I couldn't be more help.

What are you trying to do? If you are just trying to sketch out floor plans or such, it looks good.

If you are trying to design parts or be a bit more precise, I highly recommend Alibre, which has a free version of its solid modeling software called Design Express. I have found their interface and method of design to be fairly intuative, though it is quite different from the mainline modeling softwares like ProE and Solidworks.

  • I still say Blender is the trump card in the freeware 3D market. :)

gunna take it for a spin and see what happens, no doubt I'll break it by asking too much of it...

Trying to compare Blender (or any other computer-generated effects software) and Sketchup, which is a simplistic architectural CAD program, is pointless. They're aimed at two very different tasks.

I haven't used Sketcup much, but it seems to be a pretty competent tool for its goal: constructing externel building models.
  • ive put it through extensive use over the last few months by rebuiling the library i work in for future planing purposes. imo, its a great program overall, certainly a lot easier than any other architectural software i fiddled with over the years. don't expect fancy stuff from it but it easy to get into (heck if a 3d program noob like me can handle it, pff!). even though it has some minor things that drive me crazy from time to time (the layer stuff is a bit wacky at times)

i know several people who have used it to plan their flats and houses with it and are happy with the result :p

I love Sketchup. It's simplistic, but as Biggles has already said, it isn't supposed to compete with 3d modeling applications. Compared to other rudimentary CAD applications, the UI is miles ahead. One use I found it to be perfect for was attempting to re-organize my room. Seems silly until one realizes how little flexible floor space there is to work with, but Sketchup saved the hassle and only took a little while to create an accurate mockup and a few concepts. Lesson learned? Can't fit a queen bed and two end tables into the bedroom, that's for sure ;)
