New TV

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I finally went up today, to pick up my Samsung TN-4061F, 40 inch 1080p 10,000:1 contrast ratio, 3 HDMI sexy beast TV. Bestbuy, raised the price from $1299 to $1499 and was out of stock, CircuitCity, had none in stock in my local store, and i'd have to drive an extra 100 miles to the nearest store that had it. I looked at the 4661F at Best Buy, but 46" is just too big for my room, and BB was selling the 4071 for $2,099 way more than i wanted to spend.

So there was my salvation, Sears.com had the 4061f listed, at $1299, IN STOCK in my local store.. so i jump in the car and off I go to drive the 50 miles to sears.. 30 miles into the trip.. THUNK, squeel squeek thud thud "WTF WAS THAT" Oh, that was one of my shocks letting go in the car popping up through the frame and into the back of my wagon. Crap. Quick, to the MIDAS cave!! 4 hours and $650 later... OFF to Sears to be Triumphant! Into sears I go, LOOK there is my TV RIght there in front, Mr Salesman, WRAP IT UP! i'll take it... you're WHAT? What do you mean its OUT OF STOCK! AHHHHHH.

well they have this nice sony, for only $1300, but i've done all my research on the Samsung, i want the samsung, What's that Mr Sales Guy? You'll give me the 4071 for $1699... Yes please, i think i'll have one...

So now i'm home, moving the old TV, and unpacking my 4071, after a day like today. i think.. it's time.. for a beer.

• Ah, so that was YOU over on AVS (someone posted your story in the 71 owners' boards)

My wife and I have had this TV since October, and it is AMAZING, I cannot stress enough how incredible the PQ is, and the AMP function (when used on sources that it does not stutter with!)

To be objective there are a couple issues with the AMP, namely some stuttering on some sources (both HD and SD), but this is heavily dependent on the source and the firmware of the set. Samsung assures that they are working on a fix, and worry not, the PQ of the set is still far and away from anything else in it's price range even with AMP off.

A great story! I hope you enjoy the set as much as we have!
• Sounds like a good tv. I never thought of looking at Sears for home elctronics, gotta check them out.

Actually my story was over in the 4061 owners thread, as that was the TV i was going to get.

I've already noticed stuttering with AMP turned on with my DirecTivo SD source, i turned off AMP for that input and it works great, with my HD DirecTivo it looks sweet, also with my HD-DVD player, i just need to pick up a 2nd HDMI cable, i thought i had 2, but i've only got one, so i've got the HD-DVD via HDMI, and the HD DirecTV reciever going Component for now.

So far i love the TV, i ALMOST bought the 4661 instead, but boy am I glad i didn't, as the 40 inch 4071 is almost too big for my room, I'd have had to return the 46.

I've not checked the firmware, but i belive it has to be at least 1013, as you couldn't turn AMP off before that (if i read the thread right) I may grab 1014 shortly, The unit i got was manufactured in September 07, So i know i can't use the 2004 firmware.
• Yeah...I meant that someone took the liberty of linking to your post over in the 71 thread:)

Mine was manufactured in Sep 07, and I have 1009. Due to reports of increased stuttering with 1013 I've elected to stay put until a better fix is presented (said to be forthcoming)

What is meant by AMP being 'off' in 1013 and up is:

In previous firmwares (including mine), with AMP set to 'off' there is still some processing (i.e. frame interpolation/motion prediction) going on. In the newer firmwares when AMP is 'off' there is no interpolation occuring. the TV is still outputting 120Hz however (via duplicate frame insertion). Only turning on Game Mode drops it to 60 Hz.

Let me just say, that these AMP 'annoyances' are only that, and on feeds where it works, it is just incredible to feel like you are right there in the studio during the filming of Two and a Half Men, or right in the middle of the action in the Unit.

And don't worry about the size...I'm sure the room will 'grow' to fit it just right:D Do you have Serenity in HD? Got any game systems hooked up to it?
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I need to get serenity, And im' going to be picking up a PS3 at some point soon, i was going to get it today, but with the $600 i have to spend on the car, i may have to wait a bit.
• I got to see two episodes of firefly on wide screen.
8o is all I can say.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I still need to get Serenity in HD... although I suspect it still won't be as good as seeing it on an imax screen. :D
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I have Serenity, but a i've never seen Firefly, i'm holding off on watching it. Now that i've got this TV i think i'll catch up on a lot of stuff i've been putting off.

One Drawback, i need to do some tweaking of the settings, but out of the box, the B5 DVD's look pretty bad on this TV.
• My B5 looks much better on wide screen. It fills out the side normally left black. My last tv was black and blue or red though.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
oh on my old TV (a 30 inch widescreen HD tube) b5 looked great in widescreen, but on the new TV/HD-DVD, with the DVD player doing upconverting. it just doesn't look good.

• That's the 4061, though...he got the 4071, there's a pretty big feature difference.

Oh, I misread. Sorry. :o
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
the 4061 is the one i was going to get in the first place, but it wasn't in stock, so i got the 4071, had i been willing to wait for shipping, yes, Amazon had the 4061 for about $150 less than BreastBuy was selling the 4061 for.

as for the '71

Samsung LNT4071F 40" 1080p 120Hz LCD HDTV Price: $1,849.99

and i paid $1699. i got a good deal price wise, but i think i only got it because this was an early model. but i've not seen any major problems with it, so i'm happy.
