However, the information on Kirk's academy history and sleeping his way to the top did, as I recall, come from Fat Harry and AICN, so I wouldn't trust it. At all.
Well, I wouldn't put it past the character of Kirk to do such, either. ;) Also, I believe this portion of the report was actually reported from a reputable source first and then mirrored by AICN alongside other far less reputable "suggestions." Either way, I'm looking forward to the movie.
The writers have proven themselves quite competent in the past and there's no reason to think they'd suddenly turn stupid when it comes to a project the vast majority of them hold close to their hearts.
Though I do greatly enjoy speculation of all sorts. :D
He has always been portrayed as someone who tackled problems differently. And he was also shown to change problems to his advantage and you can see that in the movies too.
And I believe that's why he's still the most likable captain in Starfleet today.
When I look at the others, Picard, Cisco, the-name-that-shall-not-be-mentioned and Archer, none of them come close. While they are all capable officers, none have Kirk's charisma and wit. Picard is much more of a diplomat and excels in other areas than Kirk. Cisco might come closer to Kirk, but then I suppose that when you do get confronted to war, you will adapt to the situation or die.
But all that's just speculation on my part on fictional characters. :D
