WORFWORF The Burninator
To go along side Croxis' thread about the Enterprise picture.

Unfortunately, it's a terrible copy. I'll keep an eye out for something better.

Apparently a couple hundred years in the future they are still using Lincoln stick welders (but they have solved the problem of the cumbersome welding mask).

Well hey, if it works... ;)

As teasers go, it's done pretty well.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
It got me really excited. As in I didn't feel like seeing Cloverleaf excited. So it did its job.

Can it be Christmas?
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I liked it. A lot. very simple, but very effective. Though the crowd really didn't agree. I actually heard a lot of "Oh, not this again" sighs and moans. Not really the reaction I was expecting.

But as mentioned on IRC, the proportions of the ship seem better when the shot was viewed in motion. Didn't quite seem as odd as the lone teaser graphic (though still a bit wonky)

The people moaning probably moan when they see a trailer for any star trek movie.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
likely so. But it still isn't a great thing to hear when the future of a franchise depends on these very same people paying to see it. :p
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Star Trek is never going to appeal to those people. There's no point placing your hope on them. :)
• StingrayStingray Elite Ranger
The sad thing is, those are probably the same people who moan about the space program, which needs a reboot as well.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
The teaser is really only going to appeal to Star Trek fans. It won't be until the proper trailer(s) that they'll be trying to attract a wider audience.

That guy on camera 1 seems to be doing a lot of welding... in the same spot.

Why does Paramount hate the Russian space program so?
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
*insert soviet russia joke here*
• Okay Croxis, I'll bite.

Ive taken the liberty to analyze the new enterprise a bit from what little we see in the teaser.
I used Vektor's model of Franz Joseph's Constitution to replicate the shots.

I'm even more convinced that the design (at least what we see of it) hasn't changed as radical as i/we first thought it had:

I believe this shot is the nacelle shot from its aft looking forward.

And on this shot:

Most of the "organic" stuff like the ribbs on the side seem like modernized versions of the warpgrills on the old nacelle. Though it seems the nacelles have moved a bit inwards and have been a bit enlarged.

The differences between the design from the 60s and the glimpses we get here remind me of how the new Galactica is different from the old series but not vastly so. I'm not too worried about it.

Except for this IRC quote:
"they should have had the borg invade, assimilate everything and be done with it. the next startrek series: the borg invade the federation and assimilate it, only a handful of ships manage to escape and that show will be called: battlestar enterprise"
I agree, it doesn't look like the changes are particularly major, and only modernise the design rather than dramatically altering it.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Thirded. I'm still far more concerned with how the story turns out. A good story that can stand on its own will make any changes work better. If a more modern ship allows the current filmgoing population to more easily accept it, all the better.

Something interesting in the trailer though, it appears that the ship is being assembled on terra firma...wonder how she's going to get into space?

Wasn't it constructed in the San Francisco shipyards?
Though according to this, that was supposed to be in space: http://www.startrek.com/startrek/view/library/ships/article/70377.html
Anyone know more about this?
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Probably the same way others have. There is/was no evidence that the Enterprise we're familiar with wasn't capable of lifting off from the surface. On top of that, there's visual evidence of Starfleet constructing other craft on the ground (of Mars, but the plaque on the Enterprise says San Francisco, so why can't it be built near-ish there? :P). I doubt it'll even come into play during the movie as we enter some time after its construction.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
Perhaps it was built on the surface, taken up into orbit for completion and launch?

You mean individual pieces, then they were taken into space where it would be easier to put the thing together? I think that makes sense.
Oh wait. We actually see the whole thing together sorta while it's on Earth (or wherever) though. So uh... Still seems kind of strange to do it that way.

It says San Francisco on the plaque, but if the yards are orbiting earth then theres no reason they cant be named for the city. Also, given teh size of the starbases they can construct at this point (or at least by the time of the movies, which isnt that further ahead), I doubt there is any technical reason they couldnt pressurise a chamber large enough to build a starship in. To my mind it would be hugely impractical and expensive, but not impossible

Hmm...

didnt' see this in the teaser thread, so ignore if you've seen it. lol

Yup it is in the teaser thread :p
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
In interviews it has been established that it is being built on Earth.
