Callista, I'm surprised you haven't started a thread yet.
Anyway, I'm thinking it's the best of the christmas specials so far.
I kept a watch for anything that might be a hint of the series 4 phrase but it was hard to focus on that while enjoying the episode. I need to watch it again to see if I can spot it.

My thoughts:
Spoiler: Loved the new theme. Sounds almost like they had a full orchestra instead of just a studio one, or found a way to make it sound like that.
Unlike a lot of other people, apparently, I found Max's reason for wanting to kill everyone interesting and ironic (I've heard several people now say it was stupid or disappointing....*shrugs*)
I was rather shocked at how many people he killed! Unusually dark for Russell.
I loved it though when the Doctor tried to save Astrid with the teleporter and screamed "I can do anything!" before giving up. OMG that broke my heart.
*sigh* David really is God isn't he.
Also, hated the new theme. Is Russel T. turning Doctor Who into Enterprise?
And second of all Spoiler: it was Murray Gold's decision to spice up the theme a bit, at least from what I've read. He wanted to reflect the darker turn the series was taking, starting with this special. What is it you don't like about it?
Spoiler: And yes, there were a lot of deaths, though personally i would have liked to have a bit more.... umph... with each death. Especially the the deaths of the married couple seemed a bit pointless, just for the sake of having someone die.
All said i liked it. There were a few points where it felt... different. The doctor turning and telling the annoying business man all about him ("i'm a timelord...") felt like something the doctor wouldn't do (since he likes to keep an air of mystery about him).
Also, someone has discovered "slow motion" :D
I did think that was an odd choice, though Spoiler: maybe the Doctor was just getting a bit fed up with the guy, not to mention fed up with people doubting him.

Haha, wasn't that great? Apparently, RTD was talked into it by others because it really fit the scene. He generally doesn't like it at all. I can't remember now if it was the Confidential or the Commentary that talked about that though. You can listen to the commentary on the website.
Still haven't figured out what the secret phrase is yet, at least what I suspected it might be wasn't mentioned. Speaking of which, Callista, look what I found. :)

Personally, I just can't get hooked by the premise of the show nor the cast, so I'm not sure who you are trying to protect here. It's not like the show is such a hot property to begin with around these latitudes. I don't see anyone running down doors to watch it.
If anything you are only making the posts harder to read for those who might be slightly interested.
It does beg the question why do other shows have to fight for their survival and others just won't go away. :D
common curtesy. Some of us don't watch the show when it's broadcast, and when we watch the "recordings" varies hugely (i for example only watched the Christmas special on thursday, and by then there were a few posts here).
You know what they say about tastes and colors? :D
I'll let you enjoy your diet coke of scifi then. :)

How the hell is Doctor Who the diet coke of Sci-Fi? More like...Vault, half Sprite half Mountain Dew.
I thought the new theme was good, wondering about S4- when does it start?
On a related note, the second series of Torchwood begins on the 16th of this month :)

I thought Voyage was an interesting change from the ordinary, and that most of what I'd like to say has already been said by others.
Spoiler: I loved the way past Christmas episodes played into the current one. The subtle goofyness of the past was present in just enough form to allow this one to be dark, but also entertaining. I caught that the maid simply woudn't be allowed to survive early on, and I suspected the businessman would be the only one to survive (ended up only half-correct on that count), but it made no difference as I still enjoyed the episode a great deal. My biggest complaint was how they handled the teaser, what with the magical rewind button being readily accessible (and simply existing in the first place). But like the rest of the problems, it wasn't really one as it fit with the cheesy nature of the special.
I think it's somewhat sad that Kylie Minogue would have made a better companion than the whiny one we're going to get...
Kylie would have been fun, the interviews in Doctor Who Confidential show she enjoyed herself too.
I liked Martha, her crush on The Doctor was a bit annoying but other than that she was an interesting character.
As for Spoiler: Donna, I hope she dies horribly. Seems like the producers have realised having her in the show was a mistake as there wasn't much of her in the series four preview (as opposed to the series three preview which was all about Martha) and it's been revealed she won't be returning afterwards. Additionally, I suspect that's the reason why she started spreading those false rumours about David Tennant leaving.

Martha could have been bad, but they dropped the largest problematic element and allowed her to shine.
