I want a giant lunar unicycle.
  • If they only knew, the B5 model of fake gravity might well be the first one.

Why live in a hose when you can live in a cylinder?
  • You do know that the Babylon stations are based on Gerard O'neill's space station drawings, right? Babylon 5 is actually called an O'neill class station.

If you've ever played the game Zone of the Enders, there's also an O'neill station in that, but it's more faithful to his designs than the Babylon stations.
  • I think Arther C Clark or some one else, had a cylinder ship. I don't recall the name of the book.

    B5 I can remember. :)

It was the Rama series, the first book (Rendevous with Rama) was Clark only, the later three (Rama II, Garden of Rama and Rama Revealed) were a collaboration between Clark and Gentry Lee (who is also a JPL engineer).

A fairly close representation of a O'neil cylinder was also featured in one of the Gundam movies. IIRC they were planning to crash it into a city on earth.

The Zeon colonies in Gundam are often represented as O'neil Cylinders. I really shouldn't know that, given how little I like Gundam, but there you have it.

Looks more like the Bernal Sphere than the Oneill Cylinder.

  • Yeah, you're right. B5 does look more like the Bernal Sphere, but JMS has said a few times that it's based on the O'neill stations. In the official information, B5 is also called an O'neill class station.
