wife coming around

SpiritOneSpiritOne MagnetoABQ NM
So, I have been married now for almost 10 years (it will 10 years next March), and in that time, I have slowly turned the wife into a closet sci fi fan. Most recently Battlestar Galactica is her favorite show on tv. She also really enjoyed Firefly.

So last night were sitting around talking about how much longer were going to have to wait for new BSG. We both already saw Razor, so this Saturday doesn't hold a lot for us. She turns to me last night night and says, "I think Id like to watch Babylon 5. Your always saying how good it is."

So I explained to her my feelings on how it was written and popped in The Gathering. We also go through the first 3 episodes of season 1. I wouldn't say she is hooked yet, but she is interested and she does want to see more.

I haven't gone back and watched early season 1 or the gathering in quite a while, I am amazed how much I missed or simply forgot. Dr. Kyle looking on the face of a Vorlon, Lyta Alexander touching Kosh, Londo describing his death at the hands of G'kar.

All that being said, I was worried about half way through the Gathering I might lose her, I forgot how bad it was. Its clearly cringe worthy in some spots. But since she never saw it, she gave me the benefit of the doubt and kept on watching.

The other thing I saw in the Gathering, was Mr. Morden in CiC!!. I about flew out of my chair.

    Good work there Spiritone! :)

I really like the look of The Gathering. Yes it has a few bits here and there (you can tell its still early 90's, too many late 80's hairstyles in there). But overall I thought it was pretty good. Shame I never got to see it when it started all those years ago. And yes Morden was in CiC but playing a different character I believe.

Once we've got our new house I'm going to slowly train the gf in the ways of B5. She already doesn't mind watching the odd SG Atlantis so thats a start ;)
  • Yeah, Ed Wasser plays a tech named Guerra in The Gathering, it's not Morden. I have to say that if I ever introduced someone to the show, getting past The Gathering and enough of the first season might be kind of hard. Guess I'd just have to hope they take my word that it eventually gets better.

If you can get her past S1, you'll be fine. :)

where does In the Beginning go again? I don't want it to spoil too much.
  • Some say before The Gathering, but I say after the fourth season. I think that it reveals too much to be shown first. So if you're looking for an exact placement, I'd suggest right after "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars". Another thing I'd recommend is switching the episodes "Knives" and "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum".

Well, it is a good way to draw in sceptics, who wouldnt like "the gathering". I would usually say, before "the gathering", and again after S4, but if shes already hooked, then only after S4. ;)

S1 is hard to get trought for newbies, When watching the show with my 9 year old, Throughout that first season, whenever id' say "Lets watch B5" she'd say "Do we HAVE TO? Can't we watch something else?"

After slogging through S1, within the first 3 eps of season 2, she was begging to watch it, she'd want to sit through 3 or 4 eps in a row.

The key to sucking someone into the B5 world, is really getting them through S1.

As for In the Beginning... I Definately say wait till after S4.

the way we did it with my Daughter was B5 S1-S5 then The movies, skipping ACTA and LOTR, Then ACTA Followed by Crusade (which we are watching with her now) then we'll watch LOTR and TLT.

And i don't care what anyone says, I Actually enjoyed Thirdspace.

I think I need to have a run though of B5 again soon, maybe over christmas as a form of procrastination from studying :D

I just got a couple of the B5 JMS scripts, including the one for Z'ha'dum which I was just reading. I dont know how many times I've watched that episode now, but every time I do I get goosebumps during G'Kar's outro speech. Reading it just now in the script I swear it was just as real as if I were watching it; it was like Andreas was right next to me reading it to me
  • Nun of my friends like B5 :(.... One liked the first season but not after that.
  • SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
how does one only like the first season? Are they serial masochists?

  • He doesn't like si fi much. OK hardly at all. Sinclair was tormented enough for him I guess.

Voyager had a lot of crappy shows. Some of the best though.

Voyager had some good shows, DS9 had the best ones, and B5 beats them all

If you don't want to wait until the end S4 to see In the Begininng, after War Without End is also good. By then, if you are still watching B5, that means she is interested, and will be asking a lot of backstory questions. Watching ITB can be a nice break from the generally heavy storyline at that point. And after WWE, ITB really doesn't have too many spoilers, and the few it does will provide a nice air of mystery for the remainder of the series.
