What a cockup!!!

Some of you may have heard that 2 cd's containing data for for 25 million individuals and 7.25 million families receiving Child Benefits in the UK have been lost. They were sent by courier (TNT) and never arrived at their destination... the items were sent unrecorded. They were being sent to the National Audit Office. As a result the Chariman of HM Revenue & Customs has resigned. Think the mug who decided to post these should be sacked big time.

What a complete and utter farce. And this government expects the nation to trust them with all our details for a national ID card scheme??!! They can take a running jump.

This article sums up the whole event:

Yeah, read about it. Pritty weak that no one knows where the CDs are.
  • This is something that has happened before, and will happen again.

Think about a laptop which has a database backup for example, now someone steals it. It's a database ffs, it is supposed to contain lots of information.
You can always count on human factor, I doubt that whoever sent the CD's in mail didnt do it on purpose.

It's a screw up yes, did anyone get killed? No...
    Move along...

Sinclair: You are correct, but I would make the point that it wouldnt be that easy to move along if your identity was stolen as a result of this mess. Of course there are no indications that any fraud will result from this, but there is the possibility

Yes situations have come up before where laptops etc have been lost/stolen but nothing on this scale. Its a very serious screw up. The UK population is over 50m... the discs had data for 25m on it. That represents a very large number of people on this island. Whoever made the decision to post the discs didn't think and broke protocol. I'm glad I don't have kids because if I did I'd be very concerned right now.

I was a bit surprised that TNT lost the package. I've used them a lot and never had any issues. I would have expected the courier firm to have been Parcel Force or City Link who are utterly useless.

I suspect that it probably got sent to the wrong address, but the disks were sent during the postal strikes which may have contributed to their loss
