Are You An Addict?!!!

I figure most of you have already seen that BBC thing on World of Warcraft addiction (if not, you can see it here: http://youtube.com/watch?v=K8hfK3RQs2g), and it reminded me of other sort of X addiction things I've seen, not that I'm going to say that people can't get addicted to these things, since I know it's true that some people do, but it made me think of other things like this I've seen. Have you ever seen those things by shows like Dateline about video game addiction, internet addiction, kids playing too many games, or kids watching too much TV? Have any of you ever seen them do something on ADULTS that watch too much TV? Gee, I wonder why they do shows on kids watching too much TV instead? Maybe because kids don't watch Dateline? But adults that watch too much TV might watch Dateline, so that's just dandy! WE AREN'T AFRAID TO COVER ANY TOPIC!!!! JUST AS LONG AS WE DON'T SAY SOMETHING THAT MIGHT LEAD YOU TO NOT WATCH OUR SHOW!!!!!

• Now am I supposed say things about stories I had herd about people who had lost there homes and/or wives over bying magic cards or over protecting parents or the guy who killed him self over a girl in EQ?

I'm so confused.
• What? Are you serious?

Well it's in the news, so it must be true. ;) All I know is that there was a court case where the point was raised whether this kind of behavior qualifies as addiction at all since there is no substance involved. I don't know what the outcome was, but I suppose some people are more vulnerable than others.

I'd say there most certainly is addiction, there have been studies where people with "internet addiction" show all the classic signs of withdrawel whenthey are prevented from using it.

Entil'Zha beat me to it. You don't need a substance to be involved for an addiction to exist. Prominent modern addictions that don't involve are gambling, shopping/spending, sex, television, stock market and high-risk investment, and to some extent eating. One can become addicted to certain habits and actions, too. The end result is still the same: a neurochemical cocktail that keeps you going, punishes you for stopping, and simply rules out reason or logic.
• Oh yeah, I know about that. I was just making my idiotic little posts like usual because I felt like it, and now I look like even more of a moron! Yay!

Actually I think, that's where you are wrong, there is always a substance involved with addiction, it's just a question of whether it comes from the outside or is made inside your own body by your organs. All the things you've mentioned can cause pleasure, fear or excitement and those trigger the release of substances inside your bloodstream.

I know how the lack of adrenaline can cause withdrawal symptoms, but it's not problematic, at least it wasn't for me.

The problem with gaming as an addiction has more to do with how it's treated legally than physiologically, because it is indeed as much an addiction as gambling can be.

So to answer the initial question, no, I'm not addicted to gaming, or the internet, but I work in IT... so it's a professional thing. :D

It's like saying surgeons must be mass murderers because they like to cut people with knives. I guess, it depends on the context and the dosage.
• DC, yes I was completely serious. As for losing a house over Magic Cards, it was what I was told by gamers.

well having been an addict (to substances) i can tell you that i've not become addicted to the internet, as the other day when i had no internet for 24 hours, i only went SLIGHTLY crazy! i didn't kill anyone, i didnt eat off my own arm, i actually read a book, spent time with the family, allowed the TV to rot my brain...

(of course i did spend 20 minutes trying to kife any wireless signal in the area that i could)

I thought I was almost addicted to the internet, but when I moved to my current appartment I didn't have internet for 2 weeks. I noticed it didn't bother me so much.

I should have clarified. No external substance. :p
