I like Chris Pine. I'm fine with him as Kirk. But Pegg as Scotty and Urban as McCoy really have me worried. I LOVED the idea of Paul McGillion as Scotty, I think that would have been perfectly brilliant. I could see that in less than a heartbeat. Pegg on the other hand, doesn't look like Scotty, has a much deeper voice, and just has this air of cynicism that follows him. He feels like the comedian he is, whereas Scotty had this innocence about him, even when his warrior instinct was around, there was still this nice guy thing about him that Paul seems to do effortlessly. Pegg is enormously talented and I love him to death, but I just can't see it. He's going to have to prove it to me.

And Urban? That was the last thing I could ever see....a frickin Kiwi with a Kirk-like face and demeanor playing the old doc from Mississippi. Urban has talent and I've heard him do several accents before but he just seems like completely the wrong choice. I was all for Gary Sinise, he would have been absolutely perfect as McCoy. I'm annoyed because I love all the rest of the casting choices, but these two crucial roles just seem terribly miscast to me.

Yeah I think that some of these choices have been horrible mistakes and will come back to haunt them. I hope I'm wrong, but sadly I don't expect to be :(
a frickin Kiwi
I'm sorry? Is there something wrong with Kiwi actors? ;)

However, I do agree that I can't see Urban in the role at all. I was really, really hoping for Gary Sinise. He looks the part and he has the same sort of exasperated air as Kelley gave off in the role.

And by "Doesn't look like Scotty" Again, you mean he doesn't look like James Doohan, as i said before, I'd rather the new actors look NOTHING Like the original actors, the new actors are playing Kirk, Spock, Bones, Scotty, Not Shatner, Nemoy, Kelley and Doohan etc..

Well I did ask you if Urban was considered a good actor back in New Zealand a few posts back. Strikes me as an actor that gets on with the job.

I'm not really up with the NZ actors scene, I'm afraid. Also, in NZ, any actor who manages to get roles outside NZ is automatically a national hero. :p

It is impressive how well he's doing, though, and a credit to him having actual talent. Star Trek is a long way from Shortland Street.

Indeed it is a long way from that show ;) God I used to remember that being shown back in Ireland. Trying to compete with Neighbours ;) Lucky it was always put in the afternoon slot.

As long as he doesn't turn into Colin Farrell he'll be alright ;)

What's wrong with Colin Farrel? I havent ever really seen him in anything

He's good on screen. Off screen he's a bit of an arse.

Ah, if you say so ;) I think the only things I can recall seeing him in was Phonebooth(?), Alexander and Miami Vice. Wasnt overly impressed by any of them really

Biggles, it's not the fact that he's a Kiwi, it's the fact that he's a Kiwi playing a Mississippian from the 23rd century. He might as well be playing Ghandi. He's got a lot to prove to me when that movie comes out.

And I'm sorry but I think physical resemblance is very important when one actor is playing another. If I can't believe that the one actor IS the other, it ruins the entire thing for me, just as if it was a massive plot hole or continuity error. For me, physical resemblance is not just the shape of their face, it's also their eyes, their physical mannerisms, the way they walk and move. Makeup, physical training, and talent can eliminate some of those issues sometimes, but not always.

A perfect example was Michael Shanks as Dr. Jackson. He looks nothing like Spader but between the wig and his amazing physical performance, I had no trouble believing it. On the other hand, Richard neither looked, moved, or acted anything like Kurt Russell. That's not to say I don't absolutely LOVE Richard's Jack (to DEATH, I do) but he was a completely different person and it took adjustment for me to accept it. RDA managed to endear himself to me as Jack so it wasn't too hard, but then again Jack wasn't quite as important to me as Scotty and Bones.

No other cast of any show is as important to me as the original Star Trek. It has to be done right or I will be UnHappy Cat. :(
