Simon Pegg to become Scotty?

Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Just saw this on BBC site, Pegg has been offered the role of Scotty in the next Star Trek film. Interesting choice:

According to Sci-Fi, he's not been offered the roll, He's been CAST in the roll.

i LOVE Simon Pegg, while he wouldnt have been the first person i'd thought of. i am sure looking forward to seeing how he pulls it off.

I do like some of Simon Pegg's work, especially Hot Fuzz, but I have to say that I'm not overly thrilled that he's being cast as Scotty. I'm prepared to be surprised, but I just dont like the idea of it being him as I dont think he'll be able to carry the role. I was hoping that Paul McGillion from Atlantis got it personally

This is soo interesting, I am of the same opinion, I wouldn't have guessed Pegg but it'll be awesome to see how he pulls it off.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
As much as I enjoy Simon Pegg's work, I have a hard time seeing him as Scotty. So far they've been casting people that look like the original actors.

I also just cant picture him doing a scottish accent well ;)
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Probably some of it has to do with Pegg working with Abrams before on MI3. I was a bit surprised tbo, I think he's very funny and loved Spaced. But yeah as a Scot I can't picture it. Paul McGillion sure would have been ideal. Plus Scotty never had a receding hair line and right now Peggs brow is fighting a losing battle.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
You mean James Dohan never had a receding hairline, While it is hard to seperate the characters we love from the actors who play them, remember, they are NOT casting James Doohan, William Shatner, Leonard Nemoy etc. they are casting Scotty, Kirk, Spock.

In fact, i'd go so far as to say its BETTER that the new actors look nothing like the originals.
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Well yeah I suppose but its going to be hard to look at the new cast and not think of the old cast.
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
Oh don't get me wrong, it's definately going to be hard to not think of the old cast, but i think i'll find it much easier if the cast looks nothing like the oldd one.

I was personally against this, and still am, i think a DS9 movie, or heck (dont kill me, don't kill me, don't kill me) a Voyager movie woudl have been better than going back and re-writing history. But i'm willing to give it a try.

Sulu was announced, too (John Cho). So I guess the only major people left to be finalized are Kirk, Pike, and McCoy.

There haven't even been any rumors about McCoy since the Gary Sinese stuff when the nature of the film was first rumored.

Between the two, I would have chosen Paul McGillion over Simon Pegg. He just seems to fit my mental image better, though both are perfectly competent actors for the role.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I still think Gary Sinise would be awesome as McCoy.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Definitely, he would just fit the role perfectly IMO
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
The only problem is, Sinise hews a bit older than how they've been casting. McCoy and Scotty were the two oldest members of the crew, but it would be a bit silly. On the other hand, he doesn't really look his age, so it could work.

I really want Ray Liotta as Pike. Screw Tom Cruise!
• Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I am not a Tom Cruise fan, sometimes he can be a good actor, but he's a dick.

and he'd be perfect as Pike, i can totally see it.

Although Liotta would be good too
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
Karl Urban is now rumored to be in talks to play McCoy.

Also, the budget is said to be between $120 and $150 million, which is more than any other Star Trek movie, even adjusting for inflation and including the Phase II development costs in with the price of the first movie. Paramount seems to be putting some real support behind this picture.

Ray Liotta would be really good
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Of course, big budget != good movie. But we shall see.

Look at what MI:III was. Oh, the pain :( At the very least, it seems like most of the cast and crew are aware of the legacy they are fiddling with and have been taking steps to make sure everything meets with approval. Things are sounding good, but whether or not that carries over to actual production improvements is impossible to say.
• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
But at least MI:III was an impovement of stelar proportions from MI:II...
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
I cant actually remember anything about MI:II apart from it being crap. I also want too impressed with MI:III either
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
Yeah I agree with you there. Both were major disappointments in my book. Cruise can be a good actor but his ego would be too big for this film. I thought maybe Rufus Sewell (Dark City) would be good as Pike but Ray Liota would suit too. Its clear from the amount of cash Paramount are throwing at this one, they are desperate for it to succeed. If it doesn't it could be the final nail in the coffin of the Trek franchise.
• ShadowDancerShadowDancer When I say, "Why aye, gadgie," in my heart I say, "Och aye, laddie." London, UK
Nah it wont be the final nail in it, but i think it would be the last trek movie for a while, what with the "franchise fatigue" its feeling currently
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
I dunno. Paramount said they wanted to let the franchise rest a bit after Enterprise. Tbo Enterprise isn't that long off the air. Maybe they should have waited a bit longer.

Yeah maybe I was a bit harsh saying it would be the end... the Trek market is too big to just go away but I agree from the film perspective.
• I'm just going to hope for a good movie. Hope the actors can act as opposed to just being them selves <--- that isn't acting it's reciting lines. ( that doesn't mean it's bad it just means there's no range. )
• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
And Karl Urban has been named as Bones... hmm dunno if he fits really. Wasn't bad in the Lord of the Rings or Bourne. Doesn't strike me as the "doc" type.
• WORFWORF The Burninator
No, he usually plays tough guy soldier types.

Kirk has been named too, someone called Chris Pine. I've seen anything IMDB lists him in.

He was in a movie with Lindsay Lohan. That's not exactly a stellar record.

What big movie do you reckon they'll release it against this time?
• WORFWORF The Burninator
They're probably hoping to be the christmas movie that but thats about the same time as Harry Potter 6 should be released, if it takes a year and a half to film like the previous installments.

I'm sure there was another fantasy movie planned for that Christmas as well...as we all know, it's not Christmas without a fantasy epic.

• Falcon1Falcon1 Elite Ranger
So Biggles what's Urbans rep back in the motherland, being a product of kiwi tv?

As for nuKirk, nope haven't seen anything with him in it. Does kinda seem the type. Dashing young recruit look I suppose. Bet he's rubbing his hands going "yup lots of tasty alien ladies for me" :p old Kirk being such a space stud and all.

Hmm a christmas release... yeah we'll be all so stuffed from the christmas fud we'll need a transporter to beam us to the cinema ;) Or we might have so much snow we might think we're stuck on some Klingon prison planet ;)
